Hello all,
I'm forwarding the following message to the Welsh lists for anyone whose
research interests are in Montgomeryshire. Bill Barker is a member of both
the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society and the Powys Family History
Society and
has been compiling information on families of Montgomeryshire for several
years from many sources. I've been in contact with him since 1994 and he's
always been most willing to share the information he's compiled. His
preliminary manuscript has also been deposited at the NLW
(Manuscript Dept.), and, as the message indicates, it is still a work in
progress.
As I see it, purchasing this "beta-test version" CD-ROM will not only give
us an advance "peek" ahead of the public, but will also help MGY genealogy
in general by providing many of us with details we've missed and perhaps
encouraging researchers and FHS's to disseminate their own results in a
similar form.
Please note that Bill indicates he will accept orders (by post) and payment
in pounds sterling as well as U.S. dollars. (Wouldn't it be great if it was
always so easy?!)
Bill is not a subscriber to the mailing lists, as far as I know.
Best regards,
Julie Preston

A pre-publication version of the book "Families of Montgomershire, Wales
1675 to 1875", a genealogical compendium by William V.H. Barker, is
available recorded on Compact Disk (CD) for IBM-compatible PC and Apple
Macintosh home computers. The book on CD contains an introduction file, a
contents file, and about 500 files on major families and other individuals
(by parish in Montgomeryshire). The CD files. which are meant to be read
by the user's word processing software, are in Microsoft's Rich Text Format
(files have ".RTF" extension and can be read by Microsoft Works, Microsoft
Word, and most other word processors). At present (March 1998) the book on
CD is the equivalent of about 3,800 pages typewritten. No paper printout
is supplied with the CD; it being left to the user to print desired
portions for themselves.
The book on CD-ROM is being offered in "beta-test" version, for orders
received prior to June 30, 1998. As "beta-test" you get the item at a
reduced price (from expected regular offering price) and are agreeable to
providing informal feedback comments on what you found understandable (or
not), easy to use (or not), etc. The author is continuing to add results
from current research to this book. In the future, it is expected that a
revised verison will be offered to CD purchasers (at an upgrade price).
If you are interested in ordering this March 1998 beta-test version of
"Families of Montgomershire, Wales 1675 to 1875" on CD, please use the
