Dear Powys and Gwynedd members and friends:
One of the features WAGS/USA includes in each issue of their quarterly
newsletters is a listing of new acquistions to our library collection. I
wish to share some information with you about one new acquistion we have
although I know we have some WAGS members who are on this list and will read
this, then a second time when they get their Winter issue in about three
weeks time. It is an acquisition which involves North Wales heritage:
" WAGS is pleased to have received copy of "Llyfr Coffadwriaethol Am y
Dynion a Laddwyd yn Chwarel Cae-Braich-yn-Cafn, 1787-1904, by Thomas John
Roberts" as a new acquisition to our growing library collection. This
interesting addition can be interpreted and of value even to those of us who
are not fluent Welsh speakers.
' Llyfr Coffadwriaethol Am y Dynion ..." is a listing put together by
Thomas John Roberts from Fair Hill, a small terrace of houses in Bethesda,
North Wales dated February 10th, 1872. Given to WAGS in memory of the late
Ellen Hughes Qua, author of 'Growing Up Middle', who was born in Bethesda
(abt 1902 - d. USA abt 1996), donor Maldwyn Hughes of the Gwynedd Family
History Society (and relative of the late Mrs. Qua) notes the following
about the acquisition:
'The Benefit Society of the Penrhyn Quarry, [was] usually referred to by
the workers as 'the Club' to which monthly contributions were paid by
participants. If they were injured or killed at their work they, or their
dependents, received a small amount of monetary aid. The original list by
Thomas J. Roberts was in an exercise or composition book. I believe Roberts
was the Secretary or Treasurer of the Society. This is a record of the men
killed accidentally in the quarry over a period of more than 100 years,
their names and some nicknames, their addresses, their age and in some
cases, how and where in the quarry they received fatal injuries. Some died
in the quarry hospital.'"
WAGS sincerely appreciates this donation by Gwynedd member Maldwyn
Hughes. It is a most valuable genealogical tool. If any readers would like
copy of the WAGS library inventory, you may request one by sending request
to us at the mailing address listed below. Please include a self-addressed
stamped envelope (if you are a US resident for $.55). If you live out of
the US, please include appropriate postal coupons for a 2 ounce mailing
return to you. There's no charge for the inventory listing.
