Hi to 2/3 of the List
A thought for today - have just run down the emails from Powys-L and
a quick poll shows roughly one-third have some form of signature
appended.
It's possible that the balance of Subscribers are mostly new to
email and don't appreciate the value of a sig. (or prefer anonymity)
SURNAME: 'John', 'Ellen', 'Bill', or 'Liz' at the end of a
message
doesn't convey very much and there are several 'Mikes' on the List.
A surname would be nice, or at least an initial letter to
distinguish.
AREA: For those who answer queries it can be a help to know the
geographical area of the enquirer when formatting the reply.
There's no point in me suggesting a visit to Powys Archives if
you're in Patagonia. It also adds interest for some of us and the
networking might prove useful.
RESEARCH: Additionally it can be valuable to provide a *short* list
of your research interests - eg JONES, Rhayader, RAD, 19C, etc.
You can take the option of including a sig. each time you send an
email or add it as required. My preference is to add one
automatically and delete it if necessary.
Another option given is whether to include the sig. on replies and
forwarded email. I prefer to know who forwarded the mail to me
without having to go through several menus to the message source.
To set up a sig.- in the case of MS Outlook Express:
Go to Tools Menu
Select 'Stationery'
Select 'Signature'
Tick 'add to all outgoing messages' box (if required)
Type your text into the textbox:
Put your county or state, and country.
Add your email address and Website URL (and check they are correct!)
Add your research interests - just a few!
Click 'OK' 'OK' to get out.
You can also set up a sig. for Newsgroups if you use them.
It is may be advisable *not* to include *all* your snailmail address
unless you are a business.
Perhaps type a dividing line somewhere to make it more presentable.
BTW - There's no need to ramble on with wise sayings, poetry, etc,
and take up bandwidth unnecessarily
[NB this is not aimed at anyone :-) ].
See what you can do ...
Of course, subject lines are another matter!
