According to Parloc, there are *two* parishes of
Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.
One is in DEN and the other is in MGY. They are seperated by 0.9 miles!
Can some knowledgeable person confirm that there is a parish of that name in
MGY? And explain why there are two parishes in two counties please, if
Parloc is right.
Hello John,
Parloc makes a very good attempt at identifying parishes, but I've
found that it has a few errors, especially for the Welsh parishes.
This is apparently one of them ....
Parishes weren't necessarily contained completely within one county -
and there's only one parish of Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, which is (or
was, until 1974) partly in MGY and partly in DEN.
The two books, "Parish Registers of Wales", and "Guide to the Parish
Records of Clwyd", both assume that Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant was in
pre-1974 DEN; whereas "Nonconformist Registers of Wales" shows chapels
for that area in both counties.
The pre-1974 ordnance survey map shows that the county boundary ran
along the river (Afon Rhaeadr) and the parish church is on the DEN
(northern) side of the river.
Following Ernest's message, I've just checked my copy of John Speed's
map (1610) - which, curiously, shows the county boundary at that time
not on the river, but some distance south of it; putting the village
even more firmly in DEN.
The pre-1974 boundary remained unchanged when Clwyd and Powys were
created in 1974.
However, to add even further to the confusion, when Clwyd was broken
up in 1996, the boundary was moved a couple of miles to the north;
with the result that Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant is now firmly in Powys.
I think that the point here is that the various records for many
"border" parishes have not always been deposited at the most obvious
Record Office; and it therefore pays to check around.
For the record - Clwyd Family History Society and Powys Family History
Society "share" the parish quite amicably <g>.
