Subject: [POWYS] Can anyone help me finf a newspaper report?
I have just received a death certificate of a distant relative who
died in
Llanfyllin in 1898.
I am intrigued as Percy Dorning Bailey died on the 3 September from a
fractured skull " received by falling from a bicycle on a stone ....(this
word I cannot make out) Fredwddw Llanwddyn "(I think!) He was a 21 year
old Law Student. The inquest was on 5th September 1889.
His family came from Salford, Lancashire where he was born so I am
wondering what he was doing there. Was he on holiday? Was it a place to go
on holiday to? Was the bicycle a penny farthing or an ordinary?
He was found unconscious by the roadside between Beaumaris and Vyrnwy whilst
staying at his father's marine residence at Beaumaris and cycling to visit a
friend at the Lake Vyrnwy waterworks. Recently graduated LLB from Trinity
College, Cambridge. Third son of Sir William Bailey of Sale Hall.
(Manchester Times, 9 Sep 1898).
See 19th Century Newspapers Online website (available at home through many
county library services, but probably not all).
