Hello Clive
Thank you for your advice which I have taken ~ I have run a full system scan (Norton) and
I had 8 security risks and 8 have been resolved. I had opened two of Dennis's emails
on my laptop but all four were still there unopened on my main computer which I have now
deleted, so hopefully no damage done.
It is worrying to think these hackers can get into your bank accounts, we take all this
technology on board, to save paperwork for companies and banks, but it is not secure it
would seem.
Anyway many thanks for taking the time to help Clive ~ I hope poor Dennis has been able to
resolve his problem and will be back on the list very soon.
Kind regards
Shirley

the List)
Hi Shirley
I would suggest going into your favourites list in your web browser,
ighlighting the two web addresses you have 'saved', one at a time, and then
itting the 'Delete' button - to remove the links and any risk of your
ccidentally accessing the bogus sites again.
By opening (reading) suspect e-mails you can have a 'trojan' computer
rogram get into your computer operating system. However, if you have
eputable anti-virus protection such as McAfee or Norton, etc., then just
ake sure your virus definitions are up-to-date and run a full scan of your
omputer to ensure that no viruses are detected. Sometimes, with very new
iruses, even the leading anti-virus program providers may take a day or two
o catch up.
If e-mails of a similar nature don't start appearing in your name then you
hould be OK, however, once you have actually visited the bogus website then
nything is possible - so just make sure from now on that you keep your
nti-virus definitions up-to-date on a daily basis. I'd take the greatest
recautions and further advice if you use your computer for any sort of
nline banking. PayPal shouldn't be affected, but I hope you haven't saved
hatever password you use for such online payment systems on your computer!
f you have, then I'd strongly suggest changing the password and keeping the
ew password away from the computer operating system. Put it on a real piece
f paper, safely in a real folder somewhere!
For those who have the misfortune to become ensnared by such problems,
pparently a sure-fire way to encounter viruses is to visit dubious or
nchecked websites! So don't . . . !
It isn't always the person in whose name such bogus e-mails are circulated
ho has the infected computer. Apparently once such a program gets into
nyone's e-mail address book, then it can send off e-mails at random as if
hey had been sent from anyone in the address book. However, the sheer
umber all emanating from the same original address in this instance
uggests that John has temporarily disconnected the correct e-mail link and
he source of the problem.
Best regards
Clive Gardener

Hello John
Too late for me I opened 2 of them before I realised it wasn't Dennis. I
even saved the website for the Powys Mailing List ~ Is there anything I
need to do please?
Kind regards
Shirley

messages on the List)
Dear Listers,
Within the last 30 minutes, you will have received four e-mails
originating
rom fellow lister Dennis Cleaton. Each message has "(no subject)" in the
ubject line, and contains only a suspicious hot-link, plus the usual tag
ines at the bottom.
O NOT click on the link!
The most likely cause of the problem is that Dennis's computer has,
without
is knowledge, become infected by a virus or worm.
As an emergency measure, to prevent the distribution of any more such
essages, I have temporarily unsubscribed Dennis from the List.
will re-subscribe him as soon he lets me know he has 'disinfected' his
omputer and it has been given the 'all clear'.
My thanks to Powys Lister Hilary Williams for phoning me and drawing my
ttention to this problem
Kind regards,
ohn
