Hi Ruth and others
Further to my last message, I have found a birth for an Ann Williams
registered at Northleach in 1846. There is only one such birth between March
1846 - June 1847. Dowdeswell, where Ann Williams/Gooden was born, is covered
by the Northleach registration district:
JUNE 1846 District Volume Page
Ann Williams Northleach 11 404
The Jane Williams, widow, of the 1871 Census, visiting Cheltenham, may well
be the Jane Williams (aged 58), head, living with her son, John Williams
(aged 24), unmarried, general labourer, born at Dowdeswell, Gloucester, in
the 1881 Census at: Alms House No 2, Dowdeswell, Gloucester. Ref: RG
11/2561, f.5, p.4.
Best regards
Clive Gardener

Subject: Re: [POWYS] THANKS! Clara Teresa Jane Williams Gooden
Further information regarding Ann Gooden. 1871 census her place of birth
is
Dowdeswell Gloucestershire. It is quite likely that the widowed Jane
Williams is her Mother. 1861 There is Ann Williams born Dowdeswell a
servant age 13 working at Charlton Kings Gloucestershire. 1851 at
Withington there is John and Jane Williams plus other children and a
daughter Ann age 4 born Withington. The distance between Withington and
Dowdeswell is about 3 miles
It looks very much as if Clara was illegitimate, maybe Matthew Gooden was
her father?
The child Clara Godden born Evesham 1865 died when she was age 2 in 1867,
which rules that one out. Most likely one is the Clara J Williams born
Northleach June quarter 1865
As a matter of interest there is 1871 Edwin John Gooden age 23 Lessee of
tolls born Devon living Tollgate, Green Lanes, Stoke Newington Is this
one of Matthew's sons who was living at Cam in 1851?
Henry seems to be missing.
Hope this helps
Rosemary
