To add to what has already been said I too have a very strong preference for Legacy. I
have had that program for the past 10 years updating every other year or so. It has never
let me down and has numerous features of great value to family historians. The relatively
new addition of the mapping facility as a separate download is very valuable too and
allows a picture for your wall which is always useful when explaining your family to
others.
There is a free download standard version with which you can experiment paying very little
extra to upgrade to the Deluxe version when you see what is available for little money.
I'm sure you will not regret it.
Kind regards

Hi Ilene,
Many thanks for your message and your advice. It is so helpful to hear from
actual users about the different programs.
I am going to take John's advice (the moderator of the Powys List) and look
for the programs online and use a trial for a while to see which one seems
most suitable for me. I'm quite nervous about saving the 'old' version to a
GEDCOM even though I have done this before (but with great trepidation!) but
am now becoming quite excited about the prospect of searching a few programs
to see which one seems right for me. I shall certainly try Legacy after
your recommendation.
Once again, thanks for you help, I do appreciate it.
Myra

I am a PC user and have been using the Legacy program for several years. I
believe it is one of most user friendly of those for the PC. I used The
Master Genealogist several years ago, and found it very difficult to learn
and I gave up on it and switched to Legacy. I love it and we have a group
here in our genealogical society who meet monthly for support. They do have
a free version, but it is not the deluxe which has many more very useful
features. The Deluxe version in the US is about #29.95.
Good luck on your endeavor.

I'm also a Mac use, and I think Reunion is the best genealogy program
available, period!!
I am also familiar with the three most popular (in the US) PC programs, and
I would rate them Legacy first, then RootsMagic, then AncestralQuest. (I'm
not rating PAF because it has not been updated for several years and there
are no plans to update it in the future.) All three of them have free
versions available on their websites. I suggest you download and try each
of them, then keep the one you like best.
