Dear John,
As ever, so dependable! Thank you for your help and especially for sending
it in a format that even I can understand!
You make it all sound so easy. I have tentatively carried out your idea for
saving the original from my old machine as a GEDCOM file so all I have to do
now is decide which program to obtain on which to run it.
I wonder if I could presume upon your experience a little more before I
'take the plunge'?
It seems that now would be the best time to ask for advice on the choice of
which Family Tree program to use.
I do not particularly want to have to relearn a whole new system or one
which is terribly complicated. I use my program to input data, sources and
notes etc and manipulate parts of it for printing out etc. so I don't want
anything too sophisticated - or perhaps I would if tempted!
Anyway, any pro's and cons of the various choices available to me would be
extremely helpful if you are allowed to give such advice on this list.
Many thanks for all your help and for giving me such an interesting 'read'
every time I open my inbox and find emails from the Powys list.

Dear Myra,
I, too, have Family Tree Maker 2006 (version 13.0.317) installed on my
computer, although it is not my preferred program these days.
The copyright statement says "1993-2005
MyFamily.com Inc."
MyFamily.com Inc. is the parent company of
Ancestry.com, so even back in
2006, Family Tree Maker (FTM) was no longer owned by Broderbund.
As you still have the original FTM program running on your old computer, one
option available to you is to export your family history data from FTM as a
GEDCOM file.
To do this, select the 'Export file' > 'Entire file' options on the
drop-down 'File' menu.
Then choose where to save the file, name the file, and choose 'Save as
GEDCOM (*.GED)'.
GEDCOM files can be read by *any* family history software program, including
a modern version of Family Tree Maker.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: [POWYS] HELP Software
Hi all,
It's a long time since I wrote to the site but I read it avidly each day.
However, I've now come up with a problem concerning software to see my
records.
I began to keep records (many moons ago) on a Broderbund Family Tree Program
and updated to a newer version every few years.
However, I recently bought a new computer and when I looked for my original
disc (dare I say? It was the 2006 version!) to install onto the new
computer so that I could view 25 years of records..... I find it will not
allow me to look at the final version.
When I looked on Amazon to see if I could buy a 2011 version, I now find
that it is Ancestry.co.uk who are advertising.
Please, can any kind person tell me (in easy to understand jargon!) .....
Have Ancestry taken over Broderbund?
If so, if I buy their latest version (Platinum 2011) will it allow me to
read my old files?
If not - What can I do? Is there a way I could read my old file on any
other software?
I still have my old computer with the original program and all the versions
of my tree from day one to the present day (35 MB) but would really like to
now use this version on my new computer.
Any information as to the choice of a new, compatible Family Tree Program
would be exceptionally gratefully received.
Myra
