Hi Mike,
This list really is fantastic! I was really struggling to find a solution
and here I am given not only the answers but lots of other useful
information too.
The upgrade sounds very reasonable in price (and hopefully quick and
reliable to load). I'm not so sure about the new method of inputting
sources etc but I'm sure familiarity will help eventually.
However, the advice on which programs it will load and especially the
information that the original program remains intact is very welcome. I find
that I have to read and reread information on new software so often before I
can really understand new systems. Eventually I just have to dive straight
in and grope my way to some level of competence!
Anyway, thank you very much for taking the time to help me with my problem
and giving me the confidence to go ahead towards a solution. I really am
very grateful.
Myra

Hi Myra,
I recently installed FTM 2011. I only bought the upgrade package.
It claims to be able to take on files:
* PAF
* GEDCOM
* Legacy
* Master Genealogist
And, of course, FTM files, from v5 onwards. Unlike previous versions I
had (last one v16) where upgrades took control of the data, this version
imports a copy of the data in to the new program. This leaves the old
data, and program, still accessible for checking purposes.
FTM 2011 is very very powerful. You will need to completely need to
re-think your way around it. E.g. Sources are stored separately from
the other data and can be found by windows explorer, though I wouldn't
delete them that way. The source reference can be linked to the source
media, that is a census reference can have the census image linked to
it. So once the link is set up simple adding the source to other family
members also adds the image.
I found that sources imported from the way I used to do things gave many
images simply a number, regardless of a file name. (The file still had
it's file name but is only seen by it's number.) Confusing - yes.
You can see more details from software suppliers, but decide which
bundle you really need. My upgrade package actually holds the Whole
program. (less than £20.)

Dear Myra,
I, too, have Family Tree Maker 2006 (version 13.0.317) installed on my
computer, although it is not my preferred program these days.
The copyright statement says "1993-2005
MyFamily.com Inc."
MyFamily.com Inc. is the parent company of
Ancestry.com, so even back in
2006, Family Tree Maker (FTM) was no longer owned by Broderbund.
As you still have the original FTM program running on your old computer,
one
option available to you is to export your family history data from FTM as
a
GEDCOM file.
To do this, select the 'Export file'> 'Entire file' options on the
drop-down 'File' menu.
Then choose where to save the file, name the file, and choose 'Save as
GEDCOM (*.GED)'.
GEDCOM files can be read by *any* family history software program,
including
a modern version of Family Tree Maker.
Kind regards,
John
