I went down to Callwen Church, in the Upper Tawe Valley, this evening to put
Easter flowers on Dad and Mums grave.
It is a lovely valley and the Churchyard is always a very pleasant place to
be. On Street View, it is about ½ a mile east of Dan yr Ogof Caves.

Dear Listers,
There is an illustrated webpage devoted to Callwen Church in the 'Welsh
Churches and Chapels Collection' on my website. Go to:
www.jlb2011.co.uk/walespic/churches/callwen1.htm
Interestingly, according to information on the Archive Network Wales
website, the dedication of the church was changed in the 1860s and again 100
years later. The church was dedicated to St Callwen until circa 1868, after
which it was known as Capel Colwyn or St Colwen's. In the late 1880s, the
1:2,500-scale Ordnance Survey map (accessible on the Old Maps website)
identified the church as 'Capel Callwen'. The church was re-dedicated to St
John the Baptist between 1964 and 1965. The church was originally a chapel
of ease to St Cynog's Church at Defynnog, but acquired parish church status
when Callwen became a separate parish circa 1868.
The relevant Archive Network Wales webpage is at:

The Old Maps website is at
www.old-maps.co.uk/ (search on the coordinates
284800 and 216900).
Kind regards,
John
