Morning Alison & Dennis,
I have a book on my bookshelf which I had forgotten to look at "The
Surnames of Wales," by John & Sheila Rowlands, published by the
Federation of Family History Societies 1996, which lists the Beedle
surname, stating (which is what I thought) that it probably comes
from 'Beadle' the town crier. Also appears to have been a name that
strayed over from the English borders where it was more popular.
Beadle/Beedle/Biddle, who knows probably also Baydle,Boodle,
depending upon accents and the ear of the writer from county to
county. I have the Peate surname in my family tree which is written
at various times as Pate, Payte, Peet, Peat, Peate. Just like my own
surname, ap Rhys which becomes Preece, Pryse, Pryce, Price etc.
Surnames are fascinating. I recently found some living relatives in
the UK after a search that had been stagnant for 16 years because I
had lost sight of earlier relatives from the 1881 census. The surname
being Willsher or Wiltshire (other versions) had been indexed wrongly
in one of Find My Past's pages to Willshen. They accepted my
correction as the original page was definitely Willsher, but then I
got to thinking what if? And it was, my relatives surname had changed
to Willshen and there were only three families by that surname on the
1891 census and lo and behold one of them was my missing people. From
there, because of the limited surname, it was only a research hop,
step and jump to the living rels. The lower case 'r' and the lower
case 'n' can easily be mistaken for each other with unruly writing.
Cheers
Graham
