Even deportation I believe!! Theft of any kind often resulted in
the individual ending up in Australia. Particularly if they were poor!
River bailiffs were probably less vigilant at that particular time for some
reason! Perhaps the local landlord gave a particular 'free day' to the
villagers for spearing salmon. In my youth it was more apt to be done with a
large barbed hook rather than a spear ..... I believe!

with "Rebecca Rioting" lasted a good long time. In Kilvert's day the
whole
thing seemed quite a spectator sport, from his description. Perhaps
it
became increasingly covert. I can see the sense in having a local code
for a
bit of poaching. I expect we all had ancestors who were into that -
though
the penalties I believe were quite extreme.
