My grandmother Rosa Caroline Phillips was the daughter of William Phillips and Eleanor
Jane Williams (she used both names). Grandma was born August 1889; her siblings were an
older sister Annie G (who we'd never heard of until I started this search), and
younger Evelyn and Will. The family lived @ The Croft, according to the 1900 census. They
emigrated to Canada in 1907, first to Winnipeg, then most on to Saskatchewan, settling
near Yorkton. Grandma married Herbert Alexander Campbell in Winnipeg November 10 1908.
Family lore sez that Eleanor Jane's elderly father came with them to Canada. The
family arrived on several different ships. I have not yet found the travel records for
Will and Jane's father. Lore also says that they brought the horse with them and
travelled across the country by train to Winnipeg.
We have absolutely no records of any kind for Annie - we do not know if she married or
returned to Wales or died in Manitoba or Saskatchewan. Family lore says that Grandma and
her sister worked and sent money home, but I cannot prove that at all. We always thought
that it was Evelyn Grandma meant, but Evelyn was very young when they came, so I suspect
that it was actually Annie she was talking about.
I am looking for early records for Eleanor Jane Williams and William Phillips, their
families and heritage. AND when they left for Canada, if such records exist.
Thank you.
