The interesting question below forwarded to the Powys List on behalf of
Nancy Peralta who wrote direct to me (probably accidentally) as
administrator of the WLS-Radnorshire List:
---------Question begins-----------
Were there any railways from Llananno area to Liverpool in 1840-1845? How
did people leaving from that area get to Liverpool in 1845?
--------Question ends------------
I have appended my reply below.
================
Dear Nancy,
Thank you for writing to me.
There were no passenger railways in Radnorshire in the period 1840-45. I
quote from an article in the transactions of the Radnorshire Society:
-----Quote begins------
"By reason of its remoteness, hilly nature and lack of mineral resources,
Radnorshire had been by-passed in the canal era, and was untouched by the
first expansion of Railways. In the first railway mania there was a flood of
prospectuses for almost every valley in Mid-Wales, but nothing concrete
emerged till 1852, when..."

Radnorshire', page 23, accessible via Welsh Journals Online at:

It seems the earliest railways in Radnorshire opened in the late 1850s, so a
journey from Llananno to Liverpool in the 1840s would have involved a
combination of walking, horseback, horse-drawn carriage/coach, and possibly
a boat from a West Wales coastal port such as Cardigan or Aberystwyth to the
port of Liverpool. The mode of transport chosen would depend on the
financial resources of the travellers.
Kind regards,
John

Hi John,
That's what I was trying to figure out. Yes as you say she died at
Nantyglo and was buried at Llanelly Breconshire.
So if I am interpreting you right, if it says she was buried at Llanelly
Breconshire then it would have meant St Elli's
Forgive my ignorance but its something I don't know and am keen to find out

Hi John,
Is there a list of St Elli's burial records in 1827 or is it a foregone
conclusion that if Mary Davies burial at Nantyglo 11 Feb 1827 under
Llanelly Breconshire would be at St Elli's? Was this the only burial ground?

Dear Marilyn,
Mary Davies wasn't buried at Nantyglo, although she may have died there. She
was buried in the churchyard at St Elli's Church, Llanelly (Breconshire). I
believe you have the entry for her burial taken from the parish burial
register. The register (available on FindMyPast) provides a list of burials
in St Elli's burial yard.
I repeat my previous answer:
"....the record shows she was buried on 11 Feb 1827 in St Elli's Churchyard,
Llanelly. She would have died a few days earlier.
Of course, the fact that she is buried there does not mean she had a
tombstone marking her grave - or if she did it either hasn't survived or its
inscription is unreadable. This would explain why her name may not appear on
lists of monumental inscriptions."
Kind regards,
John

Genes Reunited is owned by DC Thompson publishing as is FMP.
I would prefer the old FMP search, but I have preserved with the new and am gradually getting more used to it, but they still have many improvements to make.

I'm glad it's not just me that is having problems with FMP! I have totally
given up trying to search for anyone. In fact it has dimmed my interest in
family history completely. They are still happy to take their subs though
and I will not be renewing my sub in Jan next year.
Genes Reunited has gone the same way too.
Cheers.
