Folks, having had such a lot of problems with the Welsh PRs on FMP, I tried
several suggestions on the List, and then tried Howard's URL. Thank you so
much Howard for this, as this simply works, no bother at all.
Something I found odd. I put in a clear search for a marriage several times
at Cadoxton-j-Neath in FMP, in the Welsh collection for Welsh Banns, and it
returned 0 results
I tried FamilySearch and there was the marriage I needed, telling me that
the image was on FMP, so I clicked on the link and it took me to the image I
needed, straight away. Truly odd.
So, if you want the Welsh Collection, use
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/world-records/search-all-uk-records/spe
cial-collections/the-wales-collection and bookmark it!
Many thanks for me still subscribing to FMP Howard!

I have persevered with Find my past - oh boy is it long winded.
Anyway to search on the Welsh parish records:
1. Top bar on main front page - click on "search records", and then from the drop down list select "birth, marriage, death and parish records"
2. On the search form go to the box "Record Set" and click on the link on the right hand side which says "browse record set". Rather than going through the long winded process of scrolling through every record set go to the "search filters" box and start typing in the first letters of the county you are interested in. So for Powys, by the time you have put in POW - you will see that there are 2 lots of records to choose from: Banns, Baptisms, Burials and Marriages.
Hope this helps
Megan
Hi Marylin,
This is from Ancestry:
In 1871 there was a Jane Welsh living with her granddaughters Sarah Vaughan 16 and Jane Vaughan 5 in Monkton, Pembrokeshire.
Next door were John and Jane Vaughan and their children John 15, Elizabeth 10, Alfred 8, George 4 and Martha 3. John and Jane’s ages are shown as 30, but this is clearly wrong.
In 1861 Sarah, then 6, was living at home with parents John and Jane Vaughan in Monkton together with siblings Mary 7, John 4, Thomas 3 and Elizabeth 1. The parents ages are then shown as John 32 and Jane 33.
In Q3 1853 there is a possible marriage of John Vaughan to Jane Welsh in Pembroke registration district :
Registration Year: 1853
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration district: Pembroke
Volume: 11a Page: 881
Records on Page:
Edward Gibby
Rebecca Isaacs
John Vaughan
Jane Welsh
In 1851 Jane Welsh jnr was working as a housemaid in Pembroke St Mary.
In 1841 12 year old Jane was working as a servant for John James, a 30 year old Sawyer in Pembroke St Mary.
On 5 April 1828 Jane, daughter of Benjamin and Jane Welsh was baptised at Cocheston, Pembroke.
>From this it appears fairly certain that the Jane Welsh who was living in Monkton in 1871 is the mother of Jane Vaughan and the widow of Benjamin Welsh.
Why Jane Welsh jnr should be living with John James snr and John James jnr living with Jane Welsh snr in 1841 is a real conundrum, though.
John James snr and his wife Feby (July?) are mysteries too. I haven’t been able to find them after 1841.
The Ancestry new search engine can be tamed – it’s a bit like a bucking bronco, though – liable to get away from you and go wild if you don’t keep it under firm control.
Regards
Dave on the east coast.

Hi Howard,
Looks like I am not the dummy I thought I was.
I never know why they have to fiddle with a system that works but having a
son in the computer field makes you understand ( they get bored Love to

Yes, findmypast Australia has had that system for a few years and it was
virtually impossible to find what I wanted. I persisted in using
FindMyPast UK site, even though, as I live in NZ, findmypast always
wanted me to use the Australian site. So imagine my shock/horror, when I
recently went to use findmypast.co.uk that it had adopted that same
system. Beggars belief. So please, anyone who can help navigate this new
system so it achieves what it used to achieve, tell us!

There are fixes for some of the poor navigation of the site but it is still
difficult to find things and even more difficult to do searches. What
annoyed me the most was Find My Past's refusal to accept that anything was
wrong and being more interested in just adding more record sets rather than
sort out the mess they made of the site.
They took many months before they did a few changes to the really amateurish
display they had of census results, it is slightly better but a print out
will still quite likely take two pages when previously there was a nice neat
and compact layout.

The same applies to everything on Find My Past since they 'improved' it
around April. I would not thought it was possible to devise a worse search
system than Ancestry New Search but Find My Past have managed to do so. I
have hardly used it since April and will not be renewing when my

They claimed to listen to users' complaints but it was just a PR exercise.

Hi All
One of my lines leads back to a John Jones, born sometime about 1842 in
Cathedine, which at the time was in Breconshire. As you can imagine getting
much past this is a problem. My current thinking is to document all the
Jones' in the area about that time to see if anything makes any sense so I
need access to records such as Births, Marriages and Deaths.
Does anyone know if these are available online either free or to purchase?

Dear Nancy
Castle Vale did not exist in the 1840s. Castle Vale was built later on to replace the old Stephens home of Crychell, Llananno.
There is a place called the Castle in Llananno, sometimes called Castle Bank. This is near the long disappeared settlement of New Well.

Hi Nancy,
There is a book about life in a farming community a few miles to the west of the area you are interested in that will give you a flavour of what life was like in a Radnorshire farming village at the time. It is called ‘The Forgotten Composer Edward Meredith Price Penlan. A brief History of the Pugh’s of Radnorshire 1712 to the Fifties. Farming with the Sims Family 1880 – 1950’ by Margaret Ivy Sims Jones published by St. Idloes Press, Llanidloes Powys.
It is probably out of print now, but there is one second hand copy for sale through Abe Books: http://www.abebooks.com/ Just put the first few words of the title in the search box and it should find it. Also, you might try the Great Oak Bookshop in Llanidloes: http://www.greatoakbooks.co.uk/
Sheep farming was the main industry on the Radnorshire hills with some mixed farming in the valleys.
Your young man was probably an agricultural labourer at Castle Vale farm.
Your miller could have owned his mill or he could have operated it for an owner. A tithe map of the parish would tell you who the landowners were. You can order a copy of the Llanbadarn Fynydd tithe map from the UK National Archives. Try this link: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details/C2310301-details
If that doesn’t work, just put “tithe map” llanabadarn fynydd into Google and it should hit it. You may need the tithe file and/or the tithe apportionment as well as the map to find out who the owners were.

There's another transcription error crept in here somewhere(!), because the couple were married at Alston on 28th October 1792, not 1782. A lady called Enid Mahoney from Alston, connected with the local Historical Society (I believe), confirmed the correct date for me in July 2000, working from a copy of the Alston marriage records.
The only other child the couple had was Mary Ellwood. It would be great if someone else is able to check the Llanover records for Mary's birth/baptism during 1794/5."
The Historical Soc must be correct and it makes better sense. Unfortunately no scan is available from FMP for these Northumbrian registers, only the transcript.
Maybe someone will be able to help with Mary.

Thomas Ellwood and Elizabeth Teasdale were married at Alston, Cumberland on 28th October 1782 according to FMP. Is this probable?
If so they may have had other children earlier?

Hi Glenys
Thanks very much for your quick reply.
This is amazing. The earliest reference I had to Thomas Ellwood in Wales was in connection with the sale of a brewery in 1813, "in the centre of the Tredegar and Sirhowy towns and Iron-Works, Monmouthshire." It was his first-born child, Mary Ellwood, who gave her place of birth as being Blaenavon at the time of the 1851 Census, when she was head of the household at the Heath Cock Inn in Brynmawr, under her married name of Mary Prosser. So, I didn't guess that Tredegar may have been relevant to the family during the late 18th century!
I deliberately didn't give the name of Thomas' wife, Elizabeth Teasdale, as a check on any birth that might come back, but you clearly have the right family here and I am particularly interested in the John Ellwood whom you have found, who died in September 1826.
So, perhaps Thomas initially arrived at Blaenavon, for a short period, before moving on to Tredegar? Back to the Llanover records, if anyone else can assist for Mary Ellwood . . .
Which of the two dates, the 19th or 18th March, would be the correct one to use for the baptism?
Many thanks for your help.
Best regards

Good morning, Clive
From Findmypast (Monmouthshire Baptisms) :-
John Ellwood baptised 19th March 1797 son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ellwood in St George Church Tredegar. [The transcription has it as 18th March]
At the top of the page is written - Bedwellty Parish - but there is no other information.
Sorry, I have not found Mary Ellwood.
