I'm looking into the Morgan(s) family who ran the Gwyn Arms and Ancient Briton pubs north of Ystradgynlais around 1900. I have traced them back, I think, to Myddfai in Carmarthenshire.
The Price family were gamekeepers and butchers in the area, including for famed opera singer Adelina Patti. David Price was the landlord of the Gwyn Arms.
I'd be happy to compare notes if any bells have rung.

In the Virginia City, Nevada, cemetery there is a tombstone with the following inscription:
"In Memory of William L. Williams. Born in Llanfair, Montgomeryshire, Wales, A.D. 1836. Died in Virginia, Sept. 16, A.D. 1870. Aged about 34 years. Erected by his only surviving brother DAVID."
Mr Williams would have been one of the thousands who left Wales to make their fortunes in the boom towns of the American West and there is a story for each one. Many never saw Wales again.
I'm wondering if any listers know anything about Mr Williams or his brother David. I've searched using Ancestry but have not found anything definite on him, David or their Llanfair family. A William Williams with brother David was born in Berriew but in 1838.

Happy New Year to you all!
My Powys interests/brick walls are as follows (I have mentioned most of them on this excellent list before, but am still hoping for more clues!):
1. The MANTLE family of Llanbadarnfynydd (RAD):
• I would like to be able to find the parentage of the Richard Mantle who married Catherine STEPHENS in 1774 and died there in 1806;
• I would like to find more about the connection between the Mantle family and these children whom the 1851 census lists at Sunny Bank, Llanbadarnfynydd, in the household of a later Richard Mantle and his wife Sarah (RICHARDS) – Stephen WOSTONCRAFT (12), described as ‘Nephew’; Richard EVANS (9), ‘Grandson’; Cornelius RICHARDS (6), ‘Grandson’.
2 The BEMBO/BEMBOW/BENBOW family of Llananno & Llanbadarnfynydd (RAD) and Kerry (MGY):
• I would like to indentify the Pryce/Price BEMBO who was the father of Richard Bembo who died at Rock House, Llananno in 1862, apparently aged 31. His birthplace (according to censuses) is Kerry, and there seem to be two possibilities for his father: Price Bembo (1805-72), from Kerry and Llanmerewig (MGY), who did not marry until 1846 (in Llanelly, BRE), and this Price’s father, Pryce Bembow (1775-1860), who lived in Kerry, Pontesbury (Shropshire) and Llanmerewig, and married twice.
3 The MORGAN family of Llanbadarnfynydd, Beguildy (RAD), Kerry and Mochdre (MGY):
• I would like to identify the Martha whom the 1841 and 1851 censuses show as the wife of Richard MORGAN at Prisk (Prysg), Llanfihangel Beguildy in 1841 and Yerchan, Weeg Dolfor, Kerry in 1851. Richard was born in Llanbadarnfynydd in 1798 (son of Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Mantle). Martha was apparently born around 1793 (‘not Radnorshire) and died between 1851 and 1861.
4 The JONES family in Disserth (RAD):
• I would like to know more about the parents of Ebenezer JONES (1794-1849) of Llyn, Disserth, and his wife Ann EVANS (b. abt. 1794). They married in Disserth in 1818; his parents are apparently Edward and Esther, and her mother is Mary.
• I would like to find out what happened to the Ebenezer Jones (son of the above), born Disserth 1833, who disappears from view after 1851.
5 The PRICE family of Llanyre (RAD):
• I am interested in the Rees Price who married Jane Jones in Brecon in 1861, aged 33. He was a domestic coachman. The marriage certificate gives his father’s name as Rees Price, Publican, deceased, and I think this is the Rees Price (1783-1853) of the Bell Inn, Llanyre. I have likely census entries for him in 1851 and 1861, and a possible one for 1871, but I know no more, and would be grateful for any further information.
Many thanks, and best wishes,
Shirley
Hello very distant cousin!!
Thank you very much for all the information Angela ~ the names of Margaret's siblings would be good to have if it is no trouble? I will not only be entering these details onto my Family Tree but passing the information onto the Co-ordinator for the Mills of Radnorshire who will be very interested.
I have the names and dates of birth of Thomas and Margaret Mills nee Probert's children if you would like them?
Many thanks once again
Best wishes Shirley

Hi
I sent an email re the Death of EDMUND BISHOP who according to his army
records was 55 in 1924 and still alive. He was born at Fladbury 1869 son of
Moses Bishop
I have think I have found his wife's death ,ELIZABETH BISHOP nee BOWEN died
Dec 1/4 1929 age 56 at Pontypool Monmouthshire 11a 169
Now I wondered if this was my Edmund Giles Bishop, has down Edward G, who
died June 1926 aged 57 11a 169
Is this unusual that they should both have the same vol number and page number?
Many thanks
Cheers Marilyn

Hi,
Hopefully with the weather so foul over there and hopefully with power
the List may be gazing at their computers
I am looking for the DEATH OF Edmund GILES BISHOP who was born 1869 at
Fladbury the son of MOSES BISOP and Elizabeth Trenfield
He was in the SOUTH WALES BORDERERS and I have his war record
He married Elizabeth BOWEN in 1895
This is the family in 1911 census
1911 census
Brecknockshire Registration district of Hay. Rose Cottage, Pontithel at
Three Cocks (name of Village)
Edmund Giles Bishop 42 pensioner army sergeant 18 years general post
office born Fladbury Worcester
Elizabeth 40 married 17 years 7 children 6 still living Brecon Monmouth
Thomas Arthur 15 railway porter Brecon Monmouth
Elizabeth 14 ditto
Dorothy May 12 ditto
David Edmund 8 ditto
Harold 5 ditto
Polly 3 Crickhowell Brecon
He attended his father's funeral in 1923 at Derby
His war records show
Also on his records are his marriage to Elizabeth Bowen at Brecon 10th
January 1895. He may have been in reserves as it shows discharge 9.9.14 to
15.8.1918 Also marked is that he attained the age of 55 on 25.5.1924 so
still alive then
So I have him alive in 1924. I thought I had found his death in 1951 at
Southhampton but it is not him
Lots of Edward but no Edmund. Could the indexes have the wrong name?
I do have the Britsih Newspapers subs so is any newspaper available for
this area?
His children all remained in the area so would hardly think he would
leave.Well at least one of them married at Pontypool Monmouthshire. Haven't
found Edmund wife's death either
So any suggestions welcome
Many thanks
Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia

When I was transcribing my pages of Cleveland owned cemeteries there were
several whole families who died in gas explosions, the occasional auto
accident and one murder suicide. So while it is unusual to see a married
couple dying at the same time, it is not unheard of <G> but you need to buy
those certificates and let us all know!

I should be very glad to hear from anyone who might have information on
these two families:
Howell and Sarah POWELL of Tynllwynni, Llangammarch (1840-1880) and
their children
John and Ann (née POWELL) HARRIES of Llawdre/Llawrdre/Llawndre,
Llanwrtyd (1860-1906) and their children.
The dates indicate the families' residence at that address.
Many thanks

Dear Listers,
As I'm sure you know, 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the First World
War.
What you may not know is that since last August it has been possible to
access online the handwritten wills made by "soldiers who died while serving
in the British armed forces between 1850 and 1986", especially First World
War casualties. Many British soldiers who served on the front lines of World
War I carried with them a handwritten last will and testament. Apparently,
230,000 formal and informal wills from WW1 can now be accessed. The database
can be searched at:
https://www.gov.uk/probate-search
According to the online instructions, in order to search for a will you will
need:
1. to register for the service with an email address
2. the soldier’s last name and year of death
If/when you find the entry you're seeking, you'll need to pay £6 to access
the will.
You won’t always get a complete will - sometimes soldiers only left letters
or brief instructions.
You'll find details of the project on the BBC History Magazine website at
http://tinyurl.com/pkbtrox
Well worth checking out if any of your ancestors was killed in WW1.
Kind regards,
John

Both Tregoyd (Tre+coed) and Velindre (Y Felin + tre) are descriptive place
names which can be found throughout Wales.
'Velinolne' is a red herring because its a transcription error for the
anglicised spelling of Felindre.
If you look at Tregoyd House on Google maps you'll see the village of
Velindre nearby. It's probably a case of needing to zoom in near the
location rather than relying on a search.
The other Felindre referred to is many miles away near Swansea. As the
details show, there was a Mill there - hence the name. Settlements around
mills were frequently similarly named.
Sara
Marcia,
It took some finding, Id forget the Velinolne bit of the address I doudt if
it has any modern relevance
The farm is called "Croft", it lies just to the South of the River Wye in
Herefordshire.
If you use Google maps the easiest way to find it is to search for
Winforton, then cross the river to the South, continue south through Clock
Mills to Middlewood, then follow the minor road eastwards, Croft Farm is a
short distance along that road.
Regards
Roger
I googled for it, and holy cow it is confusing, one says it is in Town:
Tregoyd Velinolne
County/Island: Herefordshire. Actually several do, all coming as far as I
can see from the census.

I have six Edward Farrs on my tree but they have all been born in Hereford and none (to my knowledge) married Ann Probert. I do have two Proberts Margaret who married Thomas Mills and Mary who married Richard Jones. Perhaps we should continue through email?

Hi Shirley,Many thanks for your reply - I would love to compare notes! My Farr
interest comes from Edward Farr who married Ann(e) Probert by licence on the
16th of August 1824 at St Peters Glasbury.Edward gave his place of birth as
Worcester. I have found an entry for an Edward Farr being born 1801 in
Worcester but wondered what the link with Glasbury would be from Worcester.
There were a lot of Farrs around Longtown and Clodock and perhaps this would
be a more likely link.Ann and Edward did go to live in Worcester where they had
four children, Henry, Edward, Mary and Charles. After this I cannot locate
Edward and Ann in the census data and Charles was transported to Australia after
his trial at the Old Bailey in London in 1847.I am very keen to try and unravel
this mystery and any help would be very gratefully received. Many thanks and a
very happy new yearAngie

Hello to Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone on the list lives close to Llanfihangle Nant Bran or knows someone in the area that could help me?? I am trying to find out if a family I am related to still lives in the area. They are living at the Cwmorchan farm on the 1911 census.
Also thanks to John and his many efforts to help with family history research. I use his webpage all the time. The Welsh Gravestone Inscriptions page has helped me many times (I live in the USA). My great grandparents left Llangammarch Wales in 1882.
Kind Regards
Robert Price

My main line is the Proberts from around Colva, Glascwm areas and the Pritchards
mainly from around Gladestry. I have also got Proberts and Farrs from

Happy New Year POWYS friends
May 2014 bring to us all, an ancestor breaking through that wall!
I am researching Thomas HAVARD born abt 1804 & according to various
census years, in Glascwm Radnor. He died 2 Aug 1874 age 70 in Cusop
Herefordshire. Thomas mar. Margaret LLOYD (bap. 14 Sep 1804 to parents
James LLOYD & Margaret HARPER) on 9 Apr 1830 at Huntington Near
Kington Hereford . Margaret d. 13 July 1881 age 77 at Cusop
Herefordshire.
Thomas & Margaret's son, James HAVARD was born sometime between
1832-1835. His age is different on some of the census data, so I can't
be sure, and I haven't found a baptism for him.
James HAVARD m 1st Caroline JONES on 12 Jul 1860 at Hay Baptist Church
Breconshire, and Caroline d 18 Jan 1872 at Tredegar Monmouth.
James mar. 2nd Hannah BEAVEN (BEVAN, BEVEN) dau. of Thomas James
BEAVEN & Hannah ?, on 22 Sep 1874 at Hay.
Their son Thomas James HAVARD was bap. 5 Dec 1875 at Hay. By 1891
Thomas was blind and living at the District School for the Indigent
Blind in Southwark, London.
I have been trying for years to discover information about Thomas
HAVARD b abt 1804 along with the baptism for son James, and I would
really appreciate help with this.
I post to the Powys list although Hereford is also predominate in
these families. The HAVARD's moved between the areas of Hay Brecon &
Cusop Hereford quite often.
