Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This is a disgrace; and it doesn't surprise me that FindMyPast have
completely botched this project.
I signed up for FMP with the recent addition of records. I can't see how
they could have got this so wrong, though I had no idea it is as bad as
a few people have pointed out.
I'm mainly looking in Montgomeryshire and Denbighshire. Though I also
wanted to search for missing marriages across the border. However, I'm
finding counties like Radnorshire have very little coverage.
For unknown reasons, registers for some years are missing. e.g.
registers for Mochdre, Montgomeryshire are missing from about 1750 to
1812. I know the originals exist, and based on what people are saying it
is quite possible that they have been filled in the wrong place.
Many registers don't go much further back than 1812, even though the
originals exist going further back.
Llansilin has gaps and has for some reason been split into Denbigh. and
Mont., when none of the parish is in Mont.
About half of Denbigh. parishes are not labelled pre-1813. With the lack
of variety of "surnames" in Denbigh. this makes that county's records
near useless. Further I don't have much hope that FMP will rectify this
issue as I know those records have been like that since March and there
are similar issues with the Cheshire collection, which I think has been
online for more than a year.
So, I have paid £100 for the membership, but due to their trademark
botching I have only been able to break-down one of numerous brick walls
I was hoping to work through. Quite tempted to ask for a refund due to
them advertising something they don't have. I'd much prefer them to fix
the issues, but based on past experience I can't see that coming.
David.

Hello Listers
I have been sending dozens of transcription error reports to Findmypast
where registers have been listed under the wrong parish. Most of these so
far Findmypast have accepted (though I don't know whether they have
corrected just the individual record or the whole register). However they
have refused to correct some of the entries for Llanbryn-mair,
Montgomeryshire, which are listed under Dolgellau, Merionethshire. I know
with 100% certainty that Findmypast are wrong in this instance (the
townships Rhiwsaeson, Tafolwern, Pennant, Dolgadfan and Tirymynach are given
on the relevant pages), but they haven't bothered to go back to the start of
the register to check. Therefore, any listers who are looking for
Llanbryn-mair events would do well also to check under Dolgellau. Perhaps
also if other FMP users were to send in similar error reports for the
Llanbryn-mair entries FMP might try a bit harder to check.
On a related point, it seems that in some cases (Anglesey anyway) parishes
have slipped by one in alphabetical order. Thus Aberffraw given as Amlwch,
Llanbabo as Llanbadrig, Llanfaelog to Llanfaethlu - and so on for lots of
parishes.

Some of the registers are not connected to a parish, which may be part
of the problem. Yet another issue is that some registers are in the
wrong country, e.g. Llansilin is in both Denbigh & Montgonery.
FMP are particularly error prone and as a web developer I can
confidently say their development team are not up to the grade required
to deal with 100s of millions of records. Their search system is
antiquated and much slower than it could be with a few tweaks.

Nicola's advice is most helpful. I too have been sending a series of error reports, which have been accepted. Oddly enough, many of mine also relate to the Dolgellau/Llanbrynmair confusion, but from the other direction. When I looked at the images for many people who according to the transcriptions might have been my Dolgellau relatives, the page clearly referred to Llanbrynmair. I sent error reports for as many individual entries as I could, but, like Nicola, I do not know if the complete set of records will be changed, or whether the relevant Dolgellau records will surface.
Two other comments which may be of more general use although I encountered them with Merioneth records:
1. A county-wide search sometimes produces names with no parish reference. On two occasions I found that the image clearly related to a parish which Findmypast did not list as within their current coverage - so they are worth looking at.
2. Patronymics are a problem, as with some other databases. With early records, if you can't find the person under the name under which they were generally known, try putting in the Christian name only, as the index refers to them as if the father's patronymic was a surname.

Hello Shirley, I'll try the

Mary Mills' life history (I work in Word as I can fill out the bare

have anything else on your ancestor Sarah Mills? Or what became of
Hugh Mills? When did he leave Upper Nanthir & where did he go? I
expect he died there as he was b 1848 and was still there in 1916?

Hi all
Just joined this list to research the family of John BOWEN (1844 Llanfyllen - 1893) & Ellen UNKNOWN (1852 Llanrhaiader - aft 1911). They had 8 children according to the 1911c, and I have the details of the 7 who were still alive then.
David - b1878 Meifod - aft 1911
Mariah - b 1880 Meifod - d 28 Mar 1953 (m Henry Treby HEALE and had 3 children)
Richard Lewis - b 1882 Salop - possibly still alive after 1919
George - b 1885 Meifod - aft 1911
Charles - b 1886 Salop - aft 1935ish
Gwen - b 1889 Salop - d 1978 Oswestry
Margaret Ellen - b 1891 Hisland Shropshire - d 1963 Oswestry
It is Charles (and his son, Rowland BOWEN) that my father and I are particularly interested in. Charles was sent to prison in 1932 for stealing from his clients - he was a solicitor. But what happened to him after that we cannot trace. Rowland wrote the definative book on the history of cricket. We have all the details that have been posted online on various websites.
If anyone has any further information either of this immediate family or relations I'd be very happy to hear from you.
Cheers
Andy

Hello Patricia
I have various documents referring to my ancestor Sarah Mills (sister
to
your husband's Mary Mills) ~ I would be very interested to hear more
about
Mary, all I have is her marriage to David Morgan in 1900.
Sarah Mills was born in 1858 at Upper Nanthir, Llannano Father John
Mills
mother Ann Mills nee Hughes.
Hugh Mills (Sarah's brother) was born in 1847 at Upper House, Nantmel.
Hugh Mills marriage address given as Upper Nanthir, Davidswell.
Hugh Mills Will address was given as Upper Nant Hir, Llannano
As you said Plentiful Gates and Upper Nanthir are next to each other in
the
Censuses ~ perhaps they were amalgamated? I have a photograph with
the
farm in the background and it doesn't look in very good repair. I'm
sorry I

Please let me know if I can help any further.

Hello Patricia
I have various documents referring to my ancestor Sarah Mills (sister to
your husband's Mary Mills) ~ I would be very interested to hear more about
Mary, all I have is her marriage to David Morgan in 1900.
Sarah Mills was born in 1858 at Upper Nanthir, Llannano Father John Mills
mother Ann Mills nee Hughes.
Hugh Mills (Sarah's brother) was born in 1847 at Upper House, Nantmel.
Hugh Mills marriage address given as Upper Nanthir, Davidswell.
Hugh Mills Will address was given as Upper Nant Hir, Llannano
As you said Plentiful Gates and Upper Nanthir are next to each other in the
Censuses ~ perhaps they were amalgamated? I have a photograph with the
farm in the background and it doesn't look in very good repair. I'm sorry I
don't have an old map of the area.
Please let me know if I can help any further.
Best wishes

Sorry, getting my 'OS's and 'SO's mixed up. The map reference for Hirfron Farm should be SO 957773.
The 25K OS maps are available on the Streetmap website: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
Search for 'St Harmon' then pan north west up the valley of Nant Tawelan, through the pass at Cwmyrychen and across Afon Dulas.

Hi Patricia,
Hirfron Farm is shown on modern 25K OS maps. It lies about three miles north-west of St Harmon at map reference OS 957773. The buildings are shown on the 50K OS map about 100 metres east of Cefn Llech, but the farm isn't named.
The road that passes through Cefn Llech has been Google Sreetviewed, so if you position yourself just to the east of Cefn Llech on Google Maps and go into streetview, you can see the roof of Hirfron through a gap in the trees.
On the 'Old Maps' website, if you put in co-ordinates 295700 and 277300 and select the 1889 1:2500 map of Radnorshire, you will get a good detailed plan of the farm. You will need to increase your browser magnification to at least 200% to see it, though, as the site is pretty useless without the enhanced zoom feature that it used to have.
The ancestral home of my Meredith family was just across the valley at Cwmyrychen.
Regards
Dave in Oz

Thank you. The spelling is as census tellers wrote it through C19 and
into C20, mainly. The family of my husband's great grandmother, the
Prices, lived there from 1841 to 1911. Can you tell me anything about
its more recent history, such as how long the Prices lived there?

Hi,
The spelling you have is misleading.
Llwynneuadd is the current spelling on the OS maps, which makes much
more
sense of the Welsh name.
On the OS maps it is located SO 073 698
Or from Crossgates follow the A483 north, after 1 mile take a left turn
near
New Lodge farm, continue north for a further 2 miles and there are two
farms
Llwynneuadd and Cwmfaerdy just off the road on either side.
