Can "signatures" from the United States and British Commonwealth nations
(Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, et al) be accepted, or must the
signatures be from citizens of England and Wales?
Thank you.

Dear Listers,
My attention has been drawn to the following:
----------------------------------
Please would any family historians out there read and consider signing this
petition:
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/1792
The idea is to have uncertified copies of certificates for family history
research, which have no legal authority, similar to they do in the Republic
of Ireland. These could be obtained at a much lower fee, the price of £2 per
certificate is suggested.
--------------------------------
The full explanatory text states:
--------------------------------
Under current legislation, the GRO can only "release this information by
means of the issue of a paper certified copy Cert of the relevant entry, and
payment of the relevant statutory fee for a certified copy." We request that
this House enacts legislation to allow the General Register Office of
England and Wales the ability to issue "uncertified" research copies of
birth, marriage and death certs - with a notice on the copies that they are
uncertified, and have no legal authority - and that these may be obtained at
a much lower cost than the current £9.25 per cert (e.g. £2) when ordered
on-line and the GRO Index Ref is provided, and that these may be issued in a
electronic (email) format or a plain paper in the same way as The Rep of
Ireland; this would enable family historians to buy many certs for their
research at a lower cost" In the Republic of Ireland you can ask for an
uncertified copy from Roscommon (their version of GRO) for €4.
--------------------------------
As I understand it, each e-petition last for up to one year, and a threshold
of 100,000 signatories has to be reached before the subject becomes eligible
to be brought before Parliament.
The petition above will close in August and currently has 8447 signatories.
Kind regards,
John

Dear Listers,
As you have probably realised, our Powys Mailing List is one of a number of
RootsWeb lists currently under attack from Spam. In particular, we are
receiving a number of messages containing suspicious links.
The e-mails can be identified by the fact that they normally have "[Powys]
(no subject)" as the subject line, and contain no message other than a
hyperlink to a suspicious website. They appear to come from the addresses of
bona fide members of the List - but without their knowledge.
Please DELETE these messages.
DO NOT open these messages, and DO NOT click on the links they contain.
I am reporting each incidence to RootsWeb as it arrives. Previous experience
shows that these spam attacks do not last very long, and are harmless if you
do not click on the links they contain.
Kind regards,
John

send her e-mail to the WLS-Montgomeryshire list, but is not a member of that
list, nor of the Powys List.
Please send any responses directly to Laura at <usrices(a)wildblue.net> as

Hello,
I found your address from a message board on rootsweb.com.
I am trying to verify the marriage of a Robert Davis to a Jane Watkin in
1812 in the village of Llanerfyl, Montgomeryshire, Wales. I have reason to
believe they were from the Methodist tradition, but am not entirely certain.
I am also trying to find out anything about the families these people came
from as I have hit a “wall” in my research.
Thank you,
Laura Rice
hi
Is it possible that Thomas was born in Wales rather than Herefordshire? If so his baptism might be listed patronymically - the Family Search site seems to list the welsh baptisms up to abt 1812 in this way i.e the surname of the child being listed as the christian name/given name of the father - my grt grt grt g/father was listed as Roger Roger rather than Roger Prosser as his father was called Roger. Maybe check some of the parishes over the border. The Hugh Wallis site is useful for this as you can select the church and then just page through looking for potentials (just hit return rather than putting in a surname or first name should give a list of all entries at the specific church).
Hope this helps
Sue

Hello there. Was wondering if someone could help me.I would like to know if it is possible to obtain the Will of David Pugh(1797-1873) late of ,Montgomeryshire who went on to live his life in London. He did quite well for himself in London gaining Freedom of the City. He died sometime in 1873.
Hi Chris - you can obtain a copy from the Leeds Probate Registry by applying by post using form PA1S - here is the link http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills
I think the cost of a will at the moment is £6
the details from the probate calendar are as follows :
Will of David Pugh late of 1 Bartholomew Close died 17 April 1783 proved at the Principal Registry by Thomas Evan Pugh of 9 Stamford Road ...Merchants Clerk the son and one of the Executors.
hope this helps

Hi John
I use gmail - the Powys messages appear to be coming through fine
(I've just checked my spam folder, there's none in there). I suggest
the concerned lister opens each of the Powys messages in the spam
folder, clicks onto "not spam". i.e. trains their account. I don't
think there's a lot you can do from your end.

Dear Listers,
One of our subscribers, who uses a Gmail address, tells me that over the
last few days some Powys list messages have been trapped by her Gmail spam
filter.
She explains that this is despite the fact that the Powys list address is in
her contact list, and she's never clicked "spam" on any suspicious messages
on the List
Please let me know if you have a Gmail address and have encountered any
similar problems recently.
Kind regards,
John

Dear Lyn,
I'm copying your original message and this reply to the Powys List, where
you originally posed the question.
As Shirley W. Vinall advised you on the Powys List, Ffrith is an Anglicised
spelling of Ffridd.
There are several topographical features and properties in the parish of
Berriew whose names include the word 'Ffridd'. In particular there is a farm
called Ffridd at grid reference SJ171032, just off the B4385, about 3
kilometres northwest of Berriew.
The Streetmaps website shows the farm on its reproduction of the modern
1:25,000 scale Ordnance Survey map - see http://tinyurl.com/ckxbrw8
Other places nearby include: Pant-y-ffridd Hill, Pant-y-ffridd,
Pen-y-ffridd, Ffridd Penthryn, and Little Ffridd.
Google Maps shows Ffridd on its satellite map - see http://goo.gl/maps/jVBy
You can use Google's StreetView facility to view the farm from ground level.
It would also be worth looking at the same area on one of the large scale
19th century maps on the Old Maps website (www.old-maps.co.uk/), using the
coordinates 316784 and 303232.
Kind regards,
John

Hello John,
In 1756, 1757 and 1780 I have an Edward Owen in Berriew baptism
registers recorded in ffrith. Is it short for a longer word somewhere
near Berriew?
I have a 1:25,000 maps to refer to.
Thanks. Lyn Brown in Griffith
Hello,
I am hoping someone may be able to tell me where ffrith/Ffrith is near
Berriew please.
It seems that my Edward Owen may have lived there in 1756 - 1781 era
I have 1:25.00 scale maps of the area.
Just hoping.
Thanks,
Lyn Brown in Griffith
Many thanks, Sue !!!!!

Hi,
I don't know whether it helps you but there are several Vaughans buried in
St. Bilo's Church Llanfilo, Brecnockshire and I believe there were a number
of Vaughans around the area. Perhaps it is worth a try.
Best wishes,
Sue in Suffolk
