Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thank you John for all you do, and best wishes to the list for a Happy
Christmas and prosperous 2013.

Hello Powys Listers,
As Christmas Day is now only a few hours away, it seems timely to send out
my Seasonal Best Wishes to all 412 members of the Powys List.
Here in Brecon it's been fairly wet and cloudy today, with just a few
glimpses of the sunshine.
Early yesterday morning, Pant-teg, near my former home in Ystalyfera,
suffered a landslip: the 'Moving Mountain', which I featured in an 'Images
of Wales' webpage back in 1998, is on the move again! Eleven homes had to be
evacuated.

But whatever the weather, I hope you all have a wonderful, and safe,
Christmas.

Dear list,
My first posting of a request.
I have Maria Price Connell born in Hay in 1811, her father being Joseph
Price Connell (although I think I have him referred to as Joseph Connell,
alias Joseph Price, in a crime and punishment register listed in the
National Library of Wales).
I cannot find any record of Maria's baptism although I can come across a
couple of male Price Connell in the Family Search LDS records.
Has anyone any information on this family?
Derrick Parsons (from a rather wet Cornwall).
Hi All
If Rosalyn Fisher is still on the list could she contact me off-list,
thanks. I seem to have lost her email address. Merry Christmas to all
and a fruitful good-hunting New Year 2013. May all your brick walls
turn to gold dust.
Cheers

Subject: [POWYS] Message from Admin: News of a new Family History Website
Dear Listers,
Like the Administrators of many RootsWeb mailing lists, I have been sent
details of a new family history website together with a request to draw it
to the attention of List members.
The website, at www.onlinefamilynetwork.org, was launched on 22 November.
Its homepage gives an outline of the purpose of the site.
By all means explore the website for yourselves, but please note that it
appears to focus heavily on US genealogy. None of its 'Resources' relate to
Wales, to Britain, or even to Europe.
As with all such website, please think hard and long before uploading any of
your GEDCOM files onto the website. If you do decide to upload a GEDCOM
file, make sure you do not include any data on living persons.
When I explored the site this morning, I failed to find any 'Terms and
Conditions' or details of the ownership of the site.
Personally, I do not think that in it present state, the website has
anything to offer those of us researching Welsh ancestry.
Kind regards,
John

I think that the standard (free) version of Legacy is limited to 4
generations but the "De Luxe" version can do as many more.

Thanks to all who responded to my 13 Nov request for suggestions on how to
prepare a single descendant chart which starts with two different sets of
ancestors. I've looked into Legacy as recommended and while I like the look
of the chart it doesn't do what I want (and I've not found any program that
will do so). I may be doing something incorrectly but I could only get it to
print four generations. The long and short of it is that I will have two
charts printed by a genealogical printer and sent to the families and they
can put them together as they wish.
The knowledge on this list is wonderful and I get so many tips on how to
improve my research. Problem is I could spend 24/7 on the computer just
reading and following up leads.
Merry Christmas to all and a very happy 2013!!

Hi All
Does anyone recognise 'The "Forge" Lane, Nr. Brecon' in this picture
postcard:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390500553520
Is this by any chance a picture of the Forge Cottages and Forge Villa/Farm
by the River Honddu, to the northeast of Brecon? The site where Brecon
Ironworks once stood?
Thanks

Hello All,
The Glanusk edition of A History of the County of Brecknock by Theophilus Jones is now on Ancestry. Unfortunately they have just digitised the 1141 pages of the four volumes in a straight run of 1141 images without even an indication of volume breaks.
To help get my bearings I made the tables below which may be of use to others.
Volume 1: images 1- 236 with the index at image 229 Volume 2: images 237 - 517 with the index at image 509
Volume 3: images 518-768 with index at image 755 Volume 4: images 769 - 1141 with the index at image 1111
As the illustration plates have no page numbers the match between page numbers and the image numbers gradually disappears in each volume so it becomes more of a estimating game.
The sections about particular parishes start at the following images:
Vol 2: Brecon (St John and St Mary) 290 Llanddew 410 Garthbrengy 417 Llandefailog Fach 428 Merthyr Cynog 439 Battle 446 Aberyscir 451 Trallong 455 Llanvihangel Nant Bran 457 Llandeilo'r Fan 459 Ty'r Abad 460 Llanwrtyd 463 Llanddewi Abergwessin 467 Llanfihangel Abergwessin 469 Llanwrthwl 473 Llanafan Fawr 475 Llanvihangel Bryn Pabuan 480 Llanganten 484 Llanavan Vechan 487 Llanlleonvel 488 Llangamarch 492 Llanynis 500 Maesmynis 502

The volumes are a real treasure trove for Breconshire researchers. I stumbled across several gems while compiling the lists.
Regards
Mary
Yes, John, many thanks are due to Mary. I have already taken advantage of
her "index." For listers without access to ancestry, I found the book on
google books. The electronic version is free and you can download a free
pdf version as well. The only thing I don't know is if it's the same
edition, as it says "in two volumes." But so far the pages I've accessed
have tracked to Mary's list.

I have found an 18th century ancestor of mine whose name was John Wigley. He was a land surveyor in Pembrokeshire but I have found no trace of him before the mid 1700s, he was probably born in 1749. I believe there was a family with this surname living in Llanbrynmair and I wonder if anyone on the list might know of any possible connection between that family and my ancestor.
Margaret
I have no idea. Certainly an interesting idea.

It appears to be a census of a landowner's houses for labourers and
other people low on the socio-economic scale.
I haven't researched the scope, but it appears to be 67 families in the
vicinity of Alberbury parish. However some places are in Cardeston,
Shropshire and some in Buttington. I have not checked all places though.

Thanks should be given to a Mr. Vaughan. He has not yet let me know if
he wishes to be named in person. He paid almost £100 for this.
Unfortunately I have found such remnants of Montgomery are lacking
compared to other counties.
Thanks for the break down on the works, I think you are right.

It seems most of the people listed are labourers and only people in and
around Alberbury.

Evening List,
A fellow researcher recently acquired a document, a private census that
contains detail that is usually not recorded - particularly for labourers.
The census covers parts of Alberbury parish in both Montgomeryshire and
Shropshire. He has kindly sent me images of the census, which I have
made available here:
http://forebears.co.uk/news/fascinating-shropshire-montgomeryshire-border...
Would be interested to hear if these are relevant to anyone. Even
without a personal connection it still makes fascinating reading.
I'm having problems deciphering some of the information. Does anyone
have any idea what 'carden no land' '1/w mouth C.C.' means?
David
Thanks for this David. I don't see anyone of personal interest, but it all
goes to make up a picture.
