Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hi list I am looking for a birth in about 1846 of Rees EVANS born Llandewi Ystradenny can anyone look this up for me or advise where I might find it.

Hello Listers,
I have added 17 new photographs to the Caernarvonshire page. From the one
lonely photo on the County of Caernarvon page to 18 photos.
My thanks to Carolyn Jones, Eirian Evans, and several kind photographers on
www.geograph.org.uk/
Thank you all for your kindness in making this a feasible project.
http://www.welshchapelsandchurches.org/caernarvon/index.htm
I have still not completed the backlog but hopefully I shall be able to add
more images in the coming months.
For those of you who haven't visited this site previously please understand
that the site counties are as they were in the past before reorganisation
and better suited to genealogy. Also please appreciate that I am not an
expert but a willing volunteer who has provided this website of photographs,
donated to start with mainly from the Glamorgan Mailing List, and later from
other parts of Wales.
Enjoy!
My best wishes, Jill

Websites at Rootsweb freepages do have rather long URLs and so really I
should have done this in the first place. It is a great website,
particularly for people in Derbyshire or area.
My best wishes, Jill

Dear Lesley,
The problem is that some of the URLs in Jill's message have been split onto
two lines.
Try using these shortened versions (created using Tiny URL -

Dear Listers,
Is there anyone who would take up my challenge to produce a website of
family photographs & photographers? It would be an absolute boon to Family

You need to have links to RootsWeb genealogy mailing lists, which you have
already.
Brett collects the photos which listers and others send him by email, and
then he uploads to his website but he also has built up a list of the
photographers and has potted histories of many of them.

If you click on the name of photographer if there are photos by him it will

Photographers?
Think of all the flea markets & car boot sales about.
Brett like many of us uses Rootsweb Freepages which is a great place to
house your website freely so long as it is genealogically linked. You can
have as much space as you need too. There is a great FreePages mailing list
too which gives you loads of help. Go here and subscribe
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
and you will automatically be

Nothing is new under the sun so they say and Brett has possibly got hid idea
from http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Brighton-Photographers.htm
These websites are a wonderful way of discovering details about your
photographer of your ancestors' photos and also of dating your photograph by
the dress worn in the area of interest.
Only an idea, but I get fired up with my own enthusiasm, so I hope one or
several of you will be too. ;-))
If you have no web design program, then download the free MS SharePoint
designer 2007. It is almost like the 1st version of MS Expression Web
program. It would be best to download it from the SharePoint designer if it
interests you. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=21581
Looks as if there is a Service pack for this too.
Why not try building a website, if not of photographers, of your family

Thank you , David. Things are rather busy for me for the next week but as
soon as I can I'll send you some information on my Jones family and see if
we have any connections. I met a number of Joneses there while on my visits
but not related!
My grandparents and members of the family lived on Barns Farm, Little Cefn
& Cefn farms
i met a Jones who owned Barns far, Sold the house to Williams. I think he
said his niece owned the farm and? That was 11 years ago. He has a daughter
living in here in Saskatchewan,Canada.
And learned in 2002 that the owner of Cefn Farm is a Jones?
Thanks again. Will be in touch.

I would think you need wills too. That is likely to be the surest way
to sort them out, far from the cheapest <G> but sure.
I am searching the surname Lewis in Malmesbury area and I am fairly
sure that all of the Lewis from 1700 to 1850 are mine but putting them
in the right "House" is oh so hard. So far I am too chicken to go for
such Parish records as the LDS has (and none from there are online
thru the LDS) so it is Wills and the Bishops Transcripts and still
they are tangled!!
As for the reason I am on this list, my William Davis born 1816 Wales,
somewhere, that is even worse than Joseph Jones!!
I mentioned the LDS, they are adding records to familysearch.org
wholesale so check them weekly or monthly. They are still light on
Wales. This site can help with free DBs
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/birthindexes-...
You can also find instructions about ordering copies from the LDS,
still quite reasonably priced

I need help. I've researched my maternal grandmother's family back to 1700
in Churchstoke and Hyssington but without confirmation I can't be sure I
have the right families. It's bothered me for years now.
There are so many Jones' and I assumed a lot of my information was the
right ones. Just going by occupation, family names, but that isn't a sure
thing either! I mean - how many shoe makers are there with the name of
Joseph Jones?
I have a lot of names and wondered if it's possible to find marriages,
deaths and burials that far back? I managed to find births and baptisms
but the rest is uncertain.
Think anyone could help me if I sent in names? (not all at once though!)
Thank you.

Hi All
I first view my email using Googlemail as webmail, and 'clean it up' before
downloading what I want to keep into Outlook (not express).
I think this is safer, but interested in any feedback.
Best wishes

Hi All
The safest way to use Outlook Express, if you use this program, is to just
view the list of incoming messages and to switch off the preview pane. This
way you can choose to open whichever messages come from trusted sources or
which have reputable subject lines and addressing information. Any messages
which arrive with nothing in the subject line should be treated with the
greatest of caution. Suspicious e-mails should be deleted without being
read - for the reason explained in the e-mail below.
Apparently, the well-publicised activities of the 'News of the World', etc.,
used the system of (an) investigator(s) sending their targets/victims an
e-mail with a tempting subject line which, as soon as it is opened in the
recipient's e-mail program, sets up a little program of its own on the
computer concerned to forward a copy of every incoming e-mail subsequently
received, to the architect/assignee of the rogue e-mail. I imagine that
other routines could also be used to forward copies of other material. The
existence of the loophole shows a shortcoming in anti-virus/firewall
software - which should be capable of detecting and annulling such routines.
Go to <View> <Layout> and uncheck the box 'Show preview pane'. If a rogue
e-mail happens to be the most recent one received, or the last one present
in the list, then the use of 'preview pane' will unwittingly start
everything into motion by remote control - without the user knowing what is
going on!
The main source of problems, however, is usually the internet link in a
rogue e-mail - so the safest thing to do when you open what might turn out
to be a rogue e-mail is to not click on any links contained within it and
also not to respond to it in any way at all.
Best regards

By and large, such spam e-mails apparently from a person A are caused because person B has inadvertently allowed their address book to be compromised. Then every address in that address book will be used as an apparent originator of spam, typically by a "botnet" of hijacked machines belonging to persons C, D, E, etc up to the millions, usually without their owners being aware of it.
The only "innocent" one in the chain is person A, who may have the most scrupulous anti-virus etc. procedures (or be using a Mac, which doesn't suffer from such things), and whose only "fault" was to be in the address book of somebody less careful.
So it's a bit hard to put the onus on such innocent persons A, as mentioned here below, to prove that it won't happen again. The only way that can be guaranteed is to generate a new e-mail address which is nobody's address book, which is a bit of a drastic remedy. Especially since it's likely that all of our e-mail addresses have been used in this way to spam somebody or other.
best regards,
Richard

Dear Lynne, and other Listers,
I can't be sure, but I doubt very much that any real harm will have been
done, but it's always best not to click on links in e-mails unless the
sender has explained what the link refers to.
The absence of a subject heading, or the presence of a suspect subject
heading should ring alarm bells.
I've asked RootsWeb to remove both of the offending messages from the Powys
Mailing List Archives.
Please note that the subscribers whose addresses have been high-jacked are
completely innocent victims.
I'll resubscribe them in a few days' time, assuming no further incidents
occur.
Kind regards,
John

Dear Listers,
As Hilary Williams kindly warned us, a message purporting to be from a Powys
List subscriber (address <susancl49(a)aol.com;>) containing a potentially
hazardous link, appeared on this mailing list this afternoon. I hope that no
one clicked on the link.
I have temporarily unsubscribed the address from which the message appears
to have been sent until the person concerned can guarantee the incident will
not recur.
It seems AOL subscribers are particularly vulnerable to this malicious
attack.
Kind regards,
John
