Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi Robert
Try googling Llanfeugan - I think this is the place you are looking for. I've found several spelling variants.
I think this is the parish where David Lewis Wooding's brother was once the Rector or Vicar. Will have to check that.
BTW your email arrived via my Spam box - still unsure why we are having problems, but at least I was able to read your message.

Subject: [POWYS] Llanfigan Parish
Hello,
I am hoping someone can help me with a couple of questions I have. A family
member John Watkins and his wife Gwen Watkins nee Price and their son John
are listed as living at Cottage in Llanfigan Parish on the 1881 census. I am
having difficulties finding were this location is. I have looked at Old Maps
and can not find a Llanfigan. I goggle Llanfigan and do not see anything
specific about it. Is there a town by that name in Brecknock (Powys)??
Second question John Watkins Jr. age 12 is listed as a scholar. Does anyone know
if there are school records available that might have this John Watkins
birthday? I have asked Powys to search for his birth registration (2 census
records list his birth place as Llangamarch) and they have not been able to find
it. I believe his birth was not registered. Soon after his birth the family
moved from Llangammarch to Llanfigan.
Any help will be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Robert Price

Correction:
Llanbrynnais is very likely to be Llanbrynmair.
Llanwrst is Llanrwst.
I suggest that you look for the family in the parish registers of
Llanbrynmair.

Dear Listers,
Those of you who enjoy exploring the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection'
on my website may like to know that at 8:30 pm this evening, the BBC4
television channel is showing the third programme in a series entitled
'Churches: How to Read Them'. The series is presented by Richard Taylor,
author of 'How to Read a Church - A Guide to Symbols and Meanings in
Churches and Cathedrals' (Rider, London, 2003; ISBN 1-8441-3053-3).
This evening's episode is entitled: "How churches were designed to give
medieval people a way to 'escape' death".
The first two episodes are available to view (probably UK only) via the BBC
website:
Episode 1 - "How churches were originally intended to protect the altar and
the rite of the Eucharist"
Episode 2 - "How and why parish churches played a crucial role in the
everyday life of the Middle Ages"
See http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tnp8f
Incidentally, I'm currently working on the next subject to be added to the
'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection': St David's Church, Llanddew,
Breconshire and the nearby Bishop Gower's Well and Bishop's Palace, a
favourite residence of Geraldus Cambrensis (Gerald of Wales) in the 12th
Century.
The 'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection' is at

There are some free sites that provide online Welsh to English translations,
such as:
www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=English&to=Welsh
which I use sometimes. Like other such sites it's not completely reliable,
but I do find it useful as someone with some knowledge of Welsh but not
fluent.
Best wishes

Bought a Oct 2010 edition of "Family Tree" magazine yesterday and it has an
extremely helpful and interesting article about how to get the best out of
Free BMD. Like many others I have been using it for years but I never
realised the full extent of its usefulness until I read the article.

Hi Listers,
I just read an article in a magazine about this translation software which includes Welsh in its list of languages it can translate to/ from! This is the first time I have seen Welsh listed for such programs. I haven't used it, so I don't know how well it works, but it looks promising. It is available for Mac or Windows, costs about $60 US, and it offers a 14 day free trial. The website is http://acetools.net/ If anyone gets it, please let us all know what you think of it.

Hi Listers,
In this month's Family Tree Magazine - www.family-tree.co.uk - has a really
excellent article entitled 'Getting the most out of Free BMD'.
It is really worth getting this magazine, as there is so much one can do to

on how to get better results and interpreting them.
I would like to thank our Glamorgan List Admin Jeff Coleman here for all the
work he does in co-ordinating his group of transcribers, and of course the
transcribers themselves. Many thanks Jeff.
Kind regards,

===============
Dear Forey,
The information from the Aberpergwm Estate papers to which I referred in my
e-mail of 26 August, included the statement that "The estate consisted in
the main of a large area in the parish of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, principally
in the hamlets of Neath Higher and Neath Middle, in the manor of Neath Ultra
and Cilybebyll, and **adjacent areas in Brecknockshire**."
You therefore need to familiarise yourself with the geography of those parts
of Breconshire which share a border with Glamorgan and are close to the
parishes of Cilybebyll and Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, and related hamlets in
Glamorgan.
The Aberpergwm Estate papers held by West Glamorgan Archives in Swansea are
described on its website at:
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=29458
The estate papers make reference to the Breconshire parishes of
Ystradgynlais and Penderyn, both of which border on Glamorgan. We already
know that the Williams owned the land at Gwaun-clawdd (in Ystradgynlais
parish), and the Estate papers also refer to the Cilhepste Estate (in
Penderyn Parish).
You would really need to make a thorough study of the estate papers in order
to sort out the extent and location of the lands owned by the Williams
family of Aberpergwm in the early years of the 19th century.
A little later in the 19th century, detailed 'tithe maps' were drawn up,
showing land ownership for tax purposes. Breconshire tithe maps are held by
public libraries in the county, by the Powys County Archives (Llandrindod
Wells), and by the National Library of Wales (Aberystwyth). Tithe maps are
not generally accessible on-line.
Even later in the 19th century (in 1873) a survey of land ownership was
produced for Parliament, commonly known as the "Returns of Owners of Land
1873". The returns are presented in the form of tables whose headings are as
follows:
Name of Owner
Address of Owner
Extent of Lands (in acres)
Gross Estimated Rental
The returns for the counties of Pembrokshire, Carmarthenshire, Breconshire,
and Glamorgan have been digitised and published on CD by 'The Archive CD
Books Project', whose US website is at http://www.archivecdbooksusa.com/

Currently there are 434 members subscribed to the List, a net increase of
