Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Someone on another mailing list got this back from FamilySearch:
'Thank you for contacting FamilySearch concerning the removal of the
collection. We were requested to take down the collection by a partner
organisation.
The collection will be down indefinitely until we are able to satisfy
the terms of the contractual agreement to publish images online.
We regret the removal of the collection and will be working to
re-introduce it again in future.'
So we can only hope they they get the legal niceties sorted sometime soon.

Martyn I want to thank you so much for that link. I have had an excellent
session on it and sorted out a mystery I discovered on Sunday. I had
discovered my great grandfather's 1911 census entry - which stated that he
and my gt grandmother had had 13 children, 9 of whom were alive. I only
knew about the children who had lived to adulthood - I have found those who
didn't on the website you mentioned. Many thanks

I am trying to trace the parents of a couple who were married in Nebo
Baptist Chapel, Ebbw Vale in 1858. They were James GRIFFITHS and Gwenllian
RICHARDS. The only other time and place that I can find any trace of this
couple is on the 1871 Census when they were living on Forge Row in Tredegar
and they had two daughters, Elizabeth (b. 1862) and Mary A (b. 1867).
Could anyone help with any information at all about this family? Many
thanks,
Helen Whyte
Hi Martin
Thanks for your help with the pointer - it's an extremely useful link!
I can see that there is going to be quite some time spent here . . .
Of course the first problem is:
1804, March 25, Thomas son of Thomas and Martha Phillips.
No address and a different Christian name for the mother, when I thought
that the gravestone inscription should have been pretty reliable. Perhaps
she was Martha Ann or Ann Martha Phillips? Hmmm!
Best regards
Clive

Hi All
Does anyone have access to a list of baptisms for Llanelly parish in
Brecknockshire?
I'm looking for details from the baptism entry for Thomas Phillips, born
16th September 1801, to Thomas and Ann Phillips - specifically for the
address or locality where the family were living.
Thanks

Hello again, List-ers,
LDS Film for Burials in Llanelly, shows a JOHN WATERS died 26 Nov.1826, aged 33yrs and his abode was given as BRYNMAWR. This is perfect timing to be the Father of SARAH WATERS (positive I.D. of her birth not yet found) - they may have come in with the many other English to Llangattock and Llanelly, for the iron ore. (Waters not old Welsh name?)
I am hoping a List-er might have BDM's they could quickly check for any other reference to this JOHN WATERS. Local historians, also, might be able to advise any lists of Mine or Foundry accidents; deaths from any worker uprisings, or cholera epidemics for November,1826 - probably a giant long-shot! This JOHN WATERS was buried at LLanelly, possibility of a headstone is probably an improbability.
If this was my Sarah Waters' father, she would have been 8 or 9 years old when he died - not
hard to imagine that child stealing food and clothing at age 16, followed by a one-way trip to Van Diemen's Land.
You have all been very helpful to date - I hope I'm not asking too much this time.
Kind regards,
Dawn Stanton (Tasmania)

This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in August 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be displayed on my website for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at

Hi Tomi,
It looks as though the information you have about Evan's birth has been
derived from the record of his marriage to Mary Lewis. The LDS Beta search
page that Margaret Harvey sent a link through for yesterday ('tis the new
day here in Australia) has notes on the various types of records. Regarding
parish records of marriages it says:
'Church of England parish register marriage records usually contain:
a.. Marriage date
b.. Name of the bride and groom
c.. Age of the bride and groom
d.. May list names of parents or other relatives
e.. Residence of the bride and groom
f.. Marital status of individuals and couples
g.. May list the dates that the marriage was announced (also called "banns
published"). This normally took place on three separate occasions prior to
the marriage and gave anyone with a valid reason a chance to object to the
marriage.
h.. After 1754 the full names of witnesses are also given. After 1837 the
full names of the fathers are given.
i.. May note if a spouse is single or widowed at the time of the marriage.
'
Elsewhere in the notes it explains that the residences of the bride and
groom were important because the banns had to be read in both parishes. So
the 'of'' most likely indicates where Evan was living when he married rather
than where he was born - which fits with the 1851 census information you
have.
Regards
Dave in Oz
And many thanks to Margaret for sharing that link with us - lots of
interesting stuff.
It sounds like some has guessed at his birth, 25 years before, and in
the same place, as the marriage. Good guess as 25 years is what I
use:). I would not put any credence in the data.

Hello List, I have found this on the IGI for Evan Nokes:
BIRTH: About 1809, Of Trevethin, Monmouth, England
Marriage: Mary Lewis03 Feb 1834 Trevethin, Monmouth, Enlgand
What does the OF mean in the birth line for Evan? Does this just mean he was living in Trevethin or born there? The 1851 census for Aberystruth says Evan was born in Montgomeryshire.
I have searched high and low for more information about Evan - pre 1841, without success. Thank you.Regards, Tomi

Hi everyone.
The following has appeared on another Rootsweb list:
" I wonder if list subscribers are aware that FamilySearch have just
announced that it is preparing to release records containing 300 million
names on its website that can be searched for free!

Try this link and select the records that you want to see."

Why can't the national libraries of Wales and England provide the service?
Here in Scotland we have a wide range of old maps available on the National
Library of Scotland and Charting the Nation websites.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/http://www.chartingthenation.lib.ed.ac.uk/
I would say that the NLS 1st edition pages are superior to old-maps.co.uk

Dear Listers,
Bad news for map lovers like me, who use the www.old-maps.co.uk/ website!
The announcement below was posted yesterday on the GENUKI-Maintainers
mailing list:
----------------
"The business group within Landmark recently decided to cease operation of
the Old-Maps site due to lack of revenue. The site receives a huge amount
of use, around 0.03% of such leading toward a sale. The historical map
store Landmark holds is a significant investment and their decision to close
the site was purely a commercial one.... i.e. the return did not cover the
costs. A new group within Landmark were given the ability to save the site
closing, and given a very small window to build a new version. We did that
in short order and attempted to mirror the original site in all respects.
Sadly due to the timeline available, we have some issues yet to resolve. One
is speed, one is the watermark displayed for 1:10,560 scale maps which is
not rendering correctly and is awaiting a fix. The watermarks are of course
required to ensure compliancy with the OS's terms.
We are working on a series of changes to the site, summarised as:
* May - a new method of site location based on modern OS mapping. This came
from a significant volume of paying customers stating they were finding site
location on the historic layers very time consuming and laborious.
* July - Town plans, Epoch 5 historic mapping & speed improvements.
* Nov - Russian historic Mapping of the UK, historic aerials and a complete
new site design.
We have a large number of current issues to address, but we are hoping that
over the coming months the site will not only return to previous usability
but also add a significant degree of improvements."
----------------
Let's hope the new group will succeed, but I doubt that the previously
available full-size images of the 19th century 1:10,560-scale OS maps will
be reinstated.
Kind regards,
John

Thanks John, This is very good news as we get lots of stuff for
Breconshire, that I know from my early days in Newbridge-on-Wye. Did you get any Gen
