Hello,
I was wondering if someone can look at Ancestry.co.uk and look up a Mary Ralph that was born circa 1818/1820 in St Harmon in the 1841 Census. I found a Mary Ralph in Abbeycwmhir, but I can't make out the name of the census place (residence) or her occupation. It looks like "Brondry ??" and as there were people with different names in the same household, I'm wondering if it was a castle or mansion type home.
Can anyone shed some light on this and perhaps her occupation?
Thanks,
Julie
Hello Listers
I have stumbled across some very detailed online maps at the British
Library. Some of them were surveys done in 1833 for the Ordnance Survey, and
show masses of farm names, apparently more than were ever printed in
published maps.
For example if you type in "Llanbrynmair" in the search engine at this site:
http://www.bl.uk/
you will pull up three online maps. These include farms which I have had
very little success in finding when doing usual Google searches.

I recieved them fine here in Salisbury Center, New York

Thank you so much listers, for all the help I have had tracking down
Pentre in the parish of Llanidloes. It made my presentation to the
members of the Welsh interest group of HAGSOC more complete.
The NLW has sent me details of the rent books where I may be able to
find out if John Richards was renting Pentre 1798-1807. The bapismal
registers for Llanidloes parish record the baptisms of his children
1799-1807 and give Pentre as the abode. I know the family moved to
Llansantffraed in Elwel RAD and the rent records may show how long
they lived in Llanidloes.
Is any one going to the NLW who could look it up? Or can you
recommend a researcher?
The details of the documents are:
GLANSEVERN (7)
14617-9 1788-9, 1790-1.RENTALS of the estates in the parish of
Llangurig, Llanidloesand Trefeglwys, of Owen Owen and later Arthur
Davies Owen.
WYNNSTAY RENTALS AND ACCOUNTS (2)1804 R61/24;1805 R62/12;1806 R62/15;
1807 R63/16 contain the tithes for p’s Llangurig,Llanidloes and

Dear Linda,
A few initial thoughts:
Did the marriage of James Price (senior) and Martha James take place after
the start of civil registration? If so, the marriage record would name give
the name of James's father. This could be vital in differentiating *your*
James Price from all the others.
Although the IGI is far from comprehensive for Wales, it would still be
worth searching for James's christening entry. You have a approximate age
for him in 1841, so you can narrow down his birth year to a five year period
(ages in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest five years).
Do you know what religious denomination he followed? This would tell you
whether was likely to have been christened in a parish church or in a
nonconformist chapel. The availability of nonconformist records is far more
patchy than that for records of the Established Church.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: [POWYS] James Price, Carpenter, Llangattock, Breconshire
Dear Listers
Having made so much progress researching my father's family and arriving at
a point where I now know for certain that my great grandfather James Price
(junior) was born at Llangattock to James Price (senior), House Carpenter
and Martha James daughter of Lewis James and Ann nee Rumsey, (they lived at
Penffawyddog farmhouse) - I have discovered distant relatives along the way.
Our problem is how to continue on the Price trail. It appears from the
census of 1841 that James Price senior was born outside the county and we
have no idea how to research this further.
I did wonder what would bring a house carpenter to Llangattock if it was not
to set up home. I believe the canal would have been completed before he was
born
He was living at Legar in 1841 but by the 1851 census he had died of small
pox (9.11.1847) at Aberdare, aged 35 leaving Martha with four young
children.
The 1841 census states
James Price born around 1812-1813 outside county
Martha Price born around 1816-1817 Breconshire
William Price aged 1
(My great grandfather James was not born until 1843)
If anyone can suggest where we could start looking - for instance would
there be records kept of staff employed - possibly working at Llangattock
Park for example. Up until now everything has been researched through
Ancestry.co. and Free BMD plus visits to Llangattock church. I am still very
much a novice when it comes to family history research techniques.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message

Hi All Listers,
I'm trying to get this message onto Powys l for the umpteenth time.
Hopefully, with John Ball's assistance, I'll now succeed
Following Sue's frustration at so many brick walls, I'd like to remind
listers of the wealth of information which can be found in the National
Library of Wales ISYS catalogue of deposited documents.
You can search the ISYS catalogue of MSS collections at National Library of
Wales at http://isys.llgc.org.uk/
There are a number of search categories on this page. You need Archives and
Manuscripts.
If, for example, you put Sue's elusive surname Maddy into the search box
20 collections of MSS come up. Each one can then be viewed by clicking on
the collection name and then
clicking on 1st hit. The collection will load & it will then highlight the
first occurrence of the name in that collection. The arrow next to the name
will take you to the next occurrence of the name in that collection or where
relevant to the next occurrence in the next collection.
You can request a photocopy of any relevant documents within the collections
by copying & pasting the document details ie name of the collection eg
"D. T. M. JONES (3)"
And details of the document you require eg
"163
1745, Dec. 3
1 Thomas Price of the parish of Clifford, co. Hereford, yeoman, William
<http://isys.llgc.org.uk/isysquery/irld051/8/doc#hit3> Previous hitMaddy
<http://isys.llgc.org.uk/isysquery/irld051/8/doc#hit5> Next hit the younger
of the borough of Talgarth, co. Brecknock, blacksmith, and Catherine his
wife
2 Herbert Morgan of the parish of Llandevalley, co. Brecknock, yeoman
AGREEMENT for the annual tenancy of the closes called Gwrlodd dan y Tuy, Kae
banal issa, Kae banal ycha, Yr wyth Kyver, Kae Lello issa, Kae Lello ycha, Y
ddwy Rhandiroth, Y Ddoi kae pistill, Kae Purcely, and Kae Shony, part of a
messuage and lands called Trehenry, parish of Llandevalley, co. Brecknock."
on an e-mail to
'holi(a)llgc.org.uk' and asking for a photocopy(ies). The charges, I think are
very reasonable.
I have made great progress with my family tree in this manner, following
years of frustration.
All the best Sue and everyone,
And thank you John!

Jim <SpaceBum8888(a)aol.com> wrote:
I'm also interested in burials at St Stephens. But Parish Registers and
MI's aren't burial registers and don't tell me what I need to know.
Parish Registers tell me when my family was buried, but not where. MI's
are only help if someone's family could afford a grave stone. Somewhere
there
must be a burial register, maintain by the church, that records everyone
who is buried in the cemetery, and the plot numbers. That is the
information
I need. I have family buried at St Stephens going back before 1800, but
they don't have a grave stones, so I don't know where.
===================
Dear Jim,
Parish registers record baptisms, marriages, and burials. Together, the
burial entries in the parish register constitute what is known as a burial
register. These entries record the names of those buried in the churchyard,
the date of each burial, and often the age of the deceased and possibly (but
not necessarily) a few other details. Burial registers often do not specify
exactly where the grave is located.
Having researched several families buried at St Stephen's over the years,
I've come to the conclusion that there are no surviving comprehensive
records linking the names of those interred to specific grave plots -
particularly in the 'old' burial yard around the church. Only the location
of those with legible monumental inscriptions can be identified. It's
possible the situation for the 'new' burial yard, situated across the lane
from the church, is different.
I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knows different!
Kind regards,
John
