Dear Robert,
I believe name of the chapel you are seeking is not 'Fsordshiredalar' but
Troedrhiwdalar, which is at grid reference SN95275328, about five miles west
of Builth.
The Coflein database (http://www.coflein.gov.uk/) provides the following
details (under reference NPRN 6068):
------------
TROEDRHIWDALAR INDEPENDENT CHAPEL, TROED-RHIW-DALAR
A chapel was built [at Troedrhiwdalar] in 1704, (re)built? in 1714. Further
works of rebuilding in 1811, 1854, and 1886 or 1887, the 1880s work to the
design of John Humphreys of Morriston. Status (2001): unknown.
------------
You'll find a modern photo of the chapel on the GEOGRAPH website at:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/157569
You can call up a highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) map of this area,
published in 1890, by going to the Old Maps website at
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
On the main page, click on the illustration which states "Click here to
begin your search". On the search page which appears, enter 295270 and
253280 into the co-ordinates search fields and click the GO button
alongside.
When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarge Map" icon on the
right-hand tab. A highly detailed map of the area will open in a new window,
showing Troedrhiwdalar Independent Chapel and the surrounding area.

John

married here. John Arthur and Elizabeth Price were married 5 April 1876 in
Builth district, Fsordshiredalar ?? Chapel, by a minister of independents
named David Aran Griffith. Can anyone help me with info about the location
or history of the church?? I would much appreciate It. I do have the

Hello Robert,
Like you, I am researching Arthurs of Llanafanfawr and am a descendant of
John Arthur, 1775-1866. My father and his family attended Troedrhiwdalar
Chapel, when they farmed in Llanafanfawr. The minister who married your
ancestors was David AFAN/AVAN Griffith and he wrote a book about the
Reverend David Williams of Troedrhiwdalar.
If you can send me more details about your Arthurs, I can see if we have a
link.

The chapel is still in use but I don't have any further info.
Hope this helps.

Hi Alison, nice to see you online again....I expect you know there were
Arthurs in St Harmon and Llanyre/ Helygen in 1851 census records?? And even more
in Nantmel (15).
The other sad news is that Mrs Ivy Hope, the wife of the late Ray Hope, has
died and her funeral service is on tomorrow, Friday 19/12/08 at 12.45pm, at
Newbridge-on Wye Church, RAD. Powys, Yours sincerely, Dennis.

Hi Robert and Alison, and a Merry Christmas to you both again this year. I
used to visit this fine Chapel in my youth on a bicycle, all up and down the
steep hill roads therel! The music and the singing there in those days was
most wonderful - in the Eisteddfod competitions I well remember now. Sadly
TV,etc, has killed most of it off today......
I have got the present Minister's name for you - the Rev David Jones, who
lives locally, Tel 01591 620651 And I am advised that he will have details of
the book that Alison has mentioned. With Best Wishes for Christmas and the
New Year to you all,

No, they were different names. In Welsh they would have been pronounced
'Sian' and 'Sioned' . What you see in the register is the English equivalent
of each.
It is always possible for the cleric to write the wrong name of course. It
happens quite often and understandable, particularly as many clergy seemed
to have written the register up only occasionally, copying from accumulated
scraps of paper!

Hi All,
Are the names Jane and Jonett interchangeable?
I have a record for two girls in the same family, one named Jane and
one Jonett. One of them died as a child. In the records, it shows
that Jane married and had a family, but there is no further
information about Jonett. The burial record says "Jane," but I wonder
if the cleric wrote the wrong name and it should have been Jonett.
Any opinions? I'll appreciate all responses.

Could someone tell me the translation of Cwmbrydd? The Township in Glascwm.
I know Cwm is Valley, but is Brydd the same as Brith?

Hello,
I located a reference to the Evangelical Magazine of March 1813 that has an
article about one of my ancestors, Thomas Colley of Montgomeryshire. Could
anyone tell me how I can locate a copy of this magazine or obtain a copy of

Hi Jean
Sorry for the delay. Been busy. I may or may not have a link.
I have a Mary JONES marrying Robert HUMPHREYS (later HUMPHRIES) in the
Parish Church in Welshpool on July 20th 1838 They brought their family
up in Rhosfawr, Meifod.
Mary's father was David JONES, a farmer and I think she was born around
1811.
Unfortunately I don't yet know where she born.
Any connection?
Kind regards
Mike
Dear Listers,
I noticed the following letter in today's 'Brecon and Radnor Express':
----------------------
Are You A Relative?
On the West wall of St Mary's Church, Gladestry are three memorial plaques
which need to be permanently moved to the North wall to allow a small
kitchen facility to be built.
The Constitution of the Church in Wales requires that permission is
first sought from the relatives of those named before the plaques are moved.
The names of those on the plaques are: Thomas and Mary Davies of
Gwerndyfnant who died in 1767 and 1790 respectively; Rev David Jones who
died in 1809 was Rector of St Mary's for 34 years; John and Isabella Watkins
of the Cwm who died in 1810 and 1818 respectively, their son John, who died
in 1843, and their daughter Rebecca Lewis who died in 1847.
If any of your readers is related to one or more of those named above
could they please contact me at Dyke House, Gladestry, Kington HR5 3NT so
that the Church may formally seek their permission to move the appropriate
plaque.

Please forgive my ignorance, but is Gwerndyfnant close enough to Ilanstephen
that Thomas Davies may reasonably be likely to be a brother or cousin of
William Davis, b. 1640 in Powys, who may be the father of William Davis, b.
1663/4 in Ilanatephen?
Thank you for your educated guess.

Hi All,
I've been away from the list for several months, digging in other
parts of the forest, so to speak. Recently I've got back to my Welsh
lines, and I learned that I have been barking up a wrong tree. There
are too many Davids and too many Elizabeths! Now I believe my
ancestors are the following family:
David EDWARDS (born about 1806 in Cefn Coed y Cymer, Vaynor,
Breconshire, the son of Edward EDWARDS and an unknown mother) married
Elizabeth DAVID (born 4 Jan 1806 in Mertyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, the dau
of Joseph DAVID and Ann). They married 2 July 1836 in Merthyr Tydfil
and had the following children:
Catherine, bap 22 June 1838, Cefn Coed y Cymer; mar Daniel JONES 6 Feb
1858, Vaynor; died 1888, Cefn Coed y Cymer.
Mary, born 9 Oct 1842, Cefn Coed y Cymer; died 28 May 1868, Cefn Coed
y Cymer
Ann, born 18 July 1844, Cefn Coed y Cymer; mar David THOMAS 1 Mar
1864, Merthyr Tydfil; died 25 Oct 1927, Utah, USA (my ggran)
Elizabeth, bap 12 June 1848, Cefn Coed y Cymer; no further infomation
Edward, bap 17 Sep 1851, Cefn Coed y Cymer; mar Ann EVANS (? not sure
this is the right Ann) abt 1871; died after 1878 but before 1881
Jane, born about 1853, Cefn Coed y Cymer; no further information
Please contact me if any of this rings a bell with you.
Many thanks!! It's good to be back.

Good morning Listers,
I wonder whether any of you know of any brick yards around the Berriew area
in the mid-1800s? My 3xgreat grandfather John AUSTIN lived in Berriew and
Welshpool c1824 - September 1891 and he was a brickmaker in every census
from 1851-91.
I've looked on the internet and there is data about brickmaking in Wales,
but I've not been able to find anything about the industry in the Berriew
area.
