Dear Listers,
This week's Retrospectives, just uploaded onto my website, are:
1. The picturesque town of Brecon in the county of Breconshire (six
pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in December
1997.
2. The historic Llansteffan Castle, in the Tywi estuary in the county of
Carmarthenshire(eight pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images
of Wales' in March 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at
www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm
After viewing the Retrospectives, why not explore my 'Webpage Archive'
and make your own Retrospective requests.
Kind regards,

Thanks for your help. Am not sure if this is my Rachel but as one of our

might be a possibility.

Hi,
As there are a lot of people looking for South Wales Borderers and Welsh
Regiment I thought I would say that I have just recently been in France
and Belgium at the World War 1 graveyards and we found the memorial to
the South Wales Borderers and 38th Welsh Regiment in Memetz Woods. If
anyone wants to know about this battle there is a brilliant website if
you just put in the google the word memetz.
It is one of the battles of the First World War that wasn't very well
documented until recent years.
Best wishes,

Dear Listers,
I've just noticed the news item below on the BBC website:
------------
The National Library for Wales in Aberystwyth is to close to the public on
Saturdays from next April.
The library's board said it had to save £250,000 in the next financial
year and blamed a "steady decrease in its budgets over recent years".
Library president Dafydd Wigley said it was "in an impossible situation".
The Welsh Assembly Government said the library had been given an increase
in its draft budget and was "disappointed" the library had "chosen this
option".
------------
For further details, see:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7730496.stm
A backward step if ever I saw one!
Kind regards,

Hello Listers,
For many years I have been trying to find the parents, family and baptism record of my 2xGt Grandfather William WOOF(E).
and/or how he came to be farming at Upper Gaer just out of Welshpool.
The census records say born (c1780 ) Bitterley or Ludlow Shropshire and his marriage at Munslow in 1818 to Eleanor SMALLMAN say he was from LLanfair.I cannot find his baptism at either of the Shropshire parishes nor can I find any mention of a WOOF family in Montgomeryshire previous to this date. (There is a William WOOF born 1780 in Cardington but this is not him as the marriages and subsequent children do not coincide.)
I would be interested to know who was farming at the Gaer before my William . It was part of LLanerchydol and I believe the land owner was David PUGH.
Any ideas
Thanks

Dear Listers,
Can anyone help with a query I've been sent about a possible old Welsh
tradition?
My correspondent says:
-------------
A relative has just bought a cottage in the Tenby area of Pembrokeshire.
Between the floor boards and the ceiling of the cottage he has found a
lady's shoe, a baby's shoe (possibly handmade in leather) and a horse
shoe. He has placed them in a box and put them back.
We wondered if this was some kind of Welsh tradition?
I would be most grateful if you have any knowledge about such thing or
traditions or maybe it was just a one off and meant something only to the
family living there.
-------------
I'd be fascinated to hear if anyone has encountered such a thing before.
Many thanks,
John

Hi Norman,
In St John the Evangelist (district 10), at 88 Struet, live a Morgan family,
with John Morgan being described as Miller. Is this the family you want?
Also in this district is mentioned another Mill which is described as
The(Priory)(in brackets and crossed out) Mill, no inhabitants quoted, but
this Mill is further up the river by about 1/4 of a mile. I would,
therefore, guess that the Miller lived in the Struet, which is the street
which adjoined one side of the Priory Mill grounds. I searched from the
Cathedral down Priory Hill as well as the Struet, but no other mention of a
Mill appears.

==============
Dear David,
If it took place in 1823, the birth could not have been registered because
the civil registration of births did not commence until July 1837.
For a pre-1837 birth, the best you can hope to find is a church or chapel
record of the child's baptism.
If the family was Anglican, you need to search the parish registers.
If the family was nonconformist, you'd need to search the records of the
chapel they attended.
See www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MGY/Churchstoke/ for details of the location
of Churchstoke church records.
As far as I can gather, Llan(n)erch is not in Churchstoke parish, or even
in the same county (Montgomeryshire).
Kind regards,
John
