Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hi Dennis & Audrey,
Good to hear from you and I suppose you also had a busy summer. We had
company much of the time and didn't even take a trip over 'the pond' this
year. The grandkids are grown up so fast and we try to not miss to much.
Time seems to go by so fast each year. Now even the holidays are upon us
again and the plan is to have them here in the mountains and the family
gathers for days at a time.
Tom bought a newer and bigger backhoe so he stays busy working and
keeping up this place. I am going to try and keep in touch with my friends
from work a little better so that will mean a few trips without Tom. We
still have two dogs and one cat and they refuse to leave the place for a
kennel. Tom has built an electric feeder for them all and it works for three
weeks with feed and they have beds all over the place.
Momma is going to be 89 this next week and my sister and I are going to
work something for the ladies that live with here in a care home. Our summer
is over and we are having a few rain showers yesterday and today so that
means it is the end of the fire season. Keep in touch and love it when you
send Probert data. I am working on the Probert website now and it should be
up in a month. The database is over 118,000 entries and still growing. Love

Pictures of: Buildings, Merthyr Tydfil (GLA); and St George's Church,
Tredegar (MON)
Dear Listers,
Next week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, uploaded two days
early onto my website, include:
1. A selection of buildings in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil, county of
Glamorgan (seven pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of
Wales' in June 1998.
2. The parish church of St George's, Tredegar, in the county of
Monmouthshire (four pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of
Wales' in September 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for about one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at
www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm
While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your
own Retrospective requests.
Kind regards,
John

Hi Nancy,
I hope all is well with you and yours in CA? I saw a 1851 reference to the
Probert Baptist Minister and farmer when you were here last, he was at
Newbridge-on-Wye at my old Pentref Baptist Chapel I think. Will call you again asap,
Yours, Dennis in RAD,Powys. We met a nice Probert lady at Llanyre when the
three CA sisters were here after you came......She was ex Newbridge school like
me.....
Dear list,
I should be interested in contacting others researching these two families
from Disserth (Radnorshire).
Ebenezer Jones (c. 1794-1849) a weaver, living at Llyn (or Llwyn?),
Disserth in 1841; wife Ann (nee Evans), born Disserth c. 1794; children
including Edward (1820-21), Mary (born c. 1820), Martha (born and died
1822), Martha (born c. 1823), Ann (born c. 1826), Edward (born c. 1829),
Ebenezer (born c. 1833), Phoebe (born c. 1834).
Evan Price (born Llanyre c. 1789), farmer of Red House, Trecoed, Disserth
in 1841 and 1851; wife Anne (born Llanyre c. 1800); children including Anne
(born c. 1822), Jane (c. 1828), Evan (born c. 1828 or 1831), Alice (born c.
1830), Henry (born c. 1834), Eliza (born c. 1840), Penry (born c. 1842). I
believe some later generations of this family had connections with Builth
quarries, but as yet have no proof of this.
Edward Jones (son of Ebenezer) and Jane/Janet Price (daughter of Evan), my
great-great-grandparents, were married at St Mary's, Builth, in 1853, and
had two children, Mary Jane (born 1854) and Henry Edward (born 1856). The
family lived in Cwmbach and Brecon, and later, after Edward's death and,
seemingly, after a second marriage of Jane to an as yet unknown Price, were
based in Builth for many years.
All information very gratefully received.
Many thanks
Shirley

Thank you for the additional info on the blind Elizabath Probert. I had her
in one census and now I have more data on her. I am busy trying to put the
database online and the designer is in the last stages, I hope. Thanks
again. Nancy

DIED
Suddenly, on Sunday last, at his house, aged 69, Mr. Edward REES, a very

Then again, maybe not as I have just transcribed two other articles on the
same page that have used the £ so perhaps it is meant to be shillings,
although they usually have an s for shillings. Fifty pounds would buy a lot
of blankets and coal though.

Thanks Lyn,
All is clearer now. Fifty pounds was an awful lot of money in 1809. He was a
nice man, wasn't he!
Great job you're doing. Look forward to seeing your web site one day.

Hi Lyn,
A question from one who remembers shillings...Should Sir Charles Morgan's
donation read '501' or '50/-' ?

The benefits derived by the poor from the establishment of the Swansea
Dispensary, are best elucidated by the number of cases, within the short
space of three months, stated in the report of the medical gentlemen to the
committee of subscribers held on Wednesday last - See Advertisement - This
institution reflects honour upon the town, and eminently merits the
approbation and support of all who can feel for the miseries of their
indigent fellow-creatures when affected by disease.
Last week, Sir Charles Morgan, of Tredegar, gave a donation of 50l. to be
distributed among the industrious poor of the town of Brecon, which was laid
out in the purchase of coals and blankets, furnishing a seasonal relief to
many necessitous families. - Such an example is worthy of imitation.

Could the last letter/digit have been meant as a letter - a small letter
'L' ?
Many typefaces did (and do) have the same symbol for the number one and
the small letter L.
I have seen many old newspaper articles which used this convention.
I agree that a donation of 501 pounds at that time would have been both
huge and an odd amount. 50L or 50 pounds would have still been
substantial. If it doesn't say 'pounds' or shillings or have any other
symbol then my bet is that this is the explanation.
By the way, one of my favourite websites is http://www.measuringworth.com/
It has detailed explanations about how difficult it is understand the
way money has changed value over the years - and then it provides a
variety of calculators to do just that!
eg In 2006 the equivalent purchasing power of 501 pounds in 1809 would
have been 26,409.77, 50 pounds in 1809 would have bought about what
2,635.71 would today. 1pound in 1809 would be equivalent to 52.71 in 2006.
(and just for fun, if you ever bought a house, try putting in the price
of your first house)
Sorry to poke my nose in but it is worth learning to understand these
old docs.
