Hi,
I have just joined the list and am seeking help as I know so little about
any records in Wales.
My father (1910 - 1984) was brought up in an orphanage in Leominster.
His grandparents, Sam & Mary Brown lived in Pembridge.
My father knew that his maternal great grandfather was called EVAN POWELL.
My father told us that his grandmother (Mary Brown, nee Powell) told him
that her parents were married at LLANFIHANGEL CHURCH.
My father also told us that his great grandparents lived NORTH OF KINGTON,
over NEW RADNOR direction.
>From this information I presume that the church was in LLANFIHANGEL
RHYDITHON.
His grandmother was born MARY POWELL in 1858.
I have found a census return showing her family in 1861 from which I
gleaned the following information:
Census place: Perloyne (RG 9/1840)- (Can't find it on the map! Can you
tell me where it is?)
Head: Evan Powell born c1817 Ag Lb Radnorshire Llanvionels
Wife: Hannahmaria born c1825 Radnorshire Llanvionels
Dtr: Naomi born c1850 Salop, Llanver
Dtr Elizabeth born c181852 Radnorshire Blethila
Dtr William born c1856 Radnorshire Knighton
Dtr Mary born 1858 Salop Clun
If I presume Evan & Hannahmaria were married about a year before the birth
of their first child (on this census) it would seem that their marriage was
about 1849.
I have been unable to find the family on any earlier or later census. (Until
1881 when Mary was married to Sam Brown)
Can anyone help me to find more information re the marriage of Evan to
Hannahmaria POSSIBLY LLANFIHANGEL RHYDITHON CHURCH? possibly about 1849?
Or any other information about the family? Or any info. as to where to look
next?
I would be extremely grateful for any help whatsoever.
Thank you in anticipation of your help,
Myra
(Duffy)
(Incidentally, I did send for a marriage cert. for an Evan Powell & Ann
Wheel 1849 Registration area Builth Wells.
This turned out to be NOT the correct one for me, but if anyone else would
like it for their records I will be pleased to pass it on to them!)
Goodmorning
If anyone has ancestors who served in the Welsh Guards during WW1, they might like
to know that Naval-Military Press have a very good book "History of the Welsh Guards.
It has an Index of Officers and Men who served in this regiment.
I found my grandfathers name. I fortunately know his service number.

Daphne
Hello Patricia,
Following on from Tom's messages, there is a William Bowen, born circa 1864,
Carmarthenshire boarding in the household of sawyer, John Williams of
Pembrokeshire at Corslwyn Cottage No.2, in the Palleg parcel of Lower
Ystradgynlais in the 1871 census. John William's wife, Margaret, born circa
1819 is also from Carmarthenshire which may provide the link. Also boarding
in the household is an 88 year old widow, Catherine Bowen, born
Carmarthenshire. I wonder if Margaret is William's mother who has married
again, or possibly an aunt? There are some other boarders with the surname
Davies to add to the mystery.
In 1881, the same William, born Llangadock, Carms. is continuing to board in
this household in Palleg. Margaret Williams gives her place of birth as
Llandovery, Carms. in this census. Although William was born in
Carmarthenshire, he appears to have lived in Ystradgynlais from a young age.
More information about Ystradgynlais can be found at:

Dear Patricia,
I agree with Tom's interpretation of the census place-name as Cwmtwrch and William
Bowen's birthplace as 'Landilo' (Llandeilo).
The information across the top of the census page indicates that the census place was
in 'Part of Palleg Hamlet' and in Ystradgynlais Civil Parish. Cwmtwrch meets both these
criteria.
The birthplace of William's wife Gwen is stated as 'Llang[?]uke Glamorgan', a spelling
variant of Llangiwg, the parish on the southwest bank of this part of the river Twrch,
which marks the county boundary between Breconshire and Glamorgan. Cwmtwrch is built
largely on the northeast bank of the river.
Kind regards,
John

Hi Patricia,
I have looked at the 1891 census and I would say the schedule is

click on publications and then on the section Local Information Sheets,
click below this sub heading where it says “These can be downloaded here”.
The list of Chapel info sheets then come up. Click on which ever you want

Hi Jill,
Re your query on Joseph Buxton Edwards..
First the bad news the one you found on the IGI is not your gggrandfather
His baptism in the Trefeglwys parish register is
#925 Joseph son of Joseph Edwards, Trap, Mason 4th April 1833.
Now the good news.
#936 Joseph son of William & Elizabeth Edwards, Caymegan, Mason 5th October
1833.
Marriage.
#184 William Edwards of this parish and Elizabeth Buxton of this parish were
married in this church by Banns with consent of parents this 11 day of
October in the year 1828.
James Morgan Curate.
William Edwards X his mark
Elizabeth Buxton X her mark.
In presence of Richard Buxton X his mark
David Davies. [Church warden]
Baptisms.
#729 William son of Joseph & Elizabeth Edward Jnr. Labourer 15.02.1829
#751 Jane daughter of William & Elizabeth Edward Penygraig 09.08.1829
#936 Joseph As above.
#1054 Evan Thomas base child of Ann Buxton 15.01.1836
#1161 John Jones base child of David Jones Wain, & Jane Buxton Cwm both
servants. 27.07.1842.
There are a number of other family baptisms which will need looking at as it
seems by their trade of Mason they should be related as with Joseph [IGI]
father.
Hope this fills in a few gaps.

I am fairly sure he is the one listed in the IGI as christened on 5th
October 1833 in Trefeglwys, Monmouthshire. The reason I think this is the
right one is because the IGI has also listed the marriage of William EDWARDS
with Elizabeth BUXTON (11th Oct.1828) of the same town and county and these
were his parents names. On all the birth indexes of his children he is
listed as from Merthyr Tydfil...the place of his wife's birth. I presume
whoever filled these forms in just copied the wifes details and they
probably didn't think it mattered.
> Questions..would Trefeglwys be a big town in 1833? Would there be many
diffferent churches? I am sure he was Presbyterian or Congregationalist)
How could I find out more details of this marriage and christening?
> On a potential match of the family on the 1851 census...Trefeglwys,
diocese of Bangor...his family is listed as Paupers...does anyone know how
they would have supported themselves in this situation. (Son Joseph seems to
be elsewhere in this census...probably one less mouth to feed)

Hi Hilary, Janet, Anna et al,
Thanks for your emails. Hilary, your Joseph was the fifteen year old I
mentioned and all the six foster children had different surnames so Janet it
does seem unlikely that they were all related to the parents. Two of the
children were born in Breconshire and four out of the county. Were you
able to find out where Joseph was born from the later censuses?
Anna thanks for the explanation for "foster child" being crossed out.
Regards,
Margaret H
