Re: [POWYS] Defynnog farms
by Hilary or Owen Williams
Hi Ridge,
You are correct that I did not receive your reply and I did try to contact
you again via your e-mail address. Glad you got the info. I'll contact
Jonathan again and see whether he can shed any more light on proceedings!!
Best wishes,
Hilary

Subject: [POWYS] Defynnog farms
Earlier this month, several contributors responded to my enquiries about
Blaencamlais (where relatives Thomas & Margaret PRICE farmed around 1800)
and Cwmcamlais (where relatives Richard & Margaret PRICE farmed at the same
time). I replied directly to Hilary Williams but I sense my emails were not
received. Thank you Hilary and please pass on my thanks to your friend
Jonathan Davies for his useful advice.
Following a suggestion (thanks Heather), I also corresponded with Gareth
Jones. Gareth pointed me to R.F.Peter Powell's "The Place Names of the
Defynog Hundred" and noted several naming errors on the 1 inch to 1 mile
O.S. maps that contribute to problems of identifying the correct farms.
Gareth had information on "my" Richard Price that proves he was not the
Richard Price connected with William & Sarah Price who farmed Blaencamlais
fach during Victorian times.
Currently, I'm leaning to Blaencamlais fawr being the 1800 "Blaencamlais" of
Thomas Price, mostly because his son farmed B fawr in the C19th. But I'm
still not sure which of the present Cwmcamlais farms corresponds to the 1800
"Cwmcamlais" of Richard Price. Gareth suggested that these farms were on
land owned by the Williams family of Penpont and a search of documents of
this family held at the NLW might shed light on the problem. I'll try and
follow this up.
Many thanks for the suggestions and, those interested in these farms & the
PRICE / SMILES families of Defynnog, please keep in touch.
Best wishes,
Ridge,
