Hannah PITT was baptized 21 May 1771 in Longtown Township,
Clodock Parish, Herefordshire, England. She was the eldest child of
James PITT Sr. and his first wife Eleanor JOHN.
The will of Hannah's brother, James PITT Jr., was written in
1840, and left an inheritance to his sister Hannah THOMAS.
I have found on ancestry on the 1851 census what appears to be
this individual:
Hannah THOMAS, age 77, an annuitant, born in Longtown,
Herefordshire. This is for (district 6) Craswall, Herefordshire, which
is a part of the large Clodock Parish I understand. Reference HO
107/1978 (I think page 9).
Cannot find her on the 1841 census, nor can I find a death that
appears to fit for her.
Do not know name of her husband nor names of any children.
Can you help?
Her brother Henry PITT was at Hay, Breconshire, Wales when the
will of their father was written in 1832 and I think I have found him
there on 1841 census.
Also think I have found her brother James PITT Jr. on the 1841
census at Longtown Township, Clodock Parish, Herefordshire, England.
Her sister Elizabeth (PITT) MEREDITH was living at Clyro,
Radnorshire, Wales when the 1841 census was taken.

Hello,
I have a marriage for a John Davies and Elizabeth Prosser in 2 Nov 1834 in
Llanelly Breconshire. I am wondering if anyone can find them on the 1841
census?
Thank you,
Tomi

What Vaughans are you looking for? I 've got Vaughans in Glasbury..my
great-great-grandfather was William Vaughan b. in Glasbury. He had an uncle
William Vaughan. How are you connected to this Vaughan family?
Kathy
Many thanks to both Hilary and Margaret for kindly looking at the census
entry for me. It is a shame but William was the only VAUGHAN in the
household it would appear. Back to the drawing board then for me.
Thanks once again.
Gwyn
Good morning,
I wonder if anyone who has access to the 1841 census images could check for
a William VAUGHAN possibly a widower. I have checked the census index and
one such possibility is Folio 7 Page number 6 Ref HO107/1456. I am
particularly interested in finding out who else is living at the address in
order to try to confirm or otherwise that I have the correct William.
Many Thanks
Gwyn
Hi Listers,
G G G Grandparents of mine were MARGARET PRICE, (daughter of ELIZABETH
PRICE and Mr(?) PRICE of Penybont Isaf, Llanwrtyd) who married REES JONES of
Cwmirfon & New Inn, Llanwrtyd in abt 1797. I have the JONES part of my Tree
but would like to trace the PRICE element of the Tree. All I know for sure
is that the mother Elizabeth, gave the ground for the building of the
Cal/Meth Chapel in the centre of Llanwrtyd Wells. Also daughter MARGARET was
co-inheritor of property from her mother.
Any help appreciated, or any descendants of the PRICE Tree warmly welcomed.
All the best,
Hilary
It sure is!!!!!!!!! Is there any children listed, and where did you find this? Thanks Connie

Hello Connie
Penrochel is the name of a dwelling situated in the parish of Llanfihangel Rhydithon which is on the A488. The nearest towns would be Knighton to the North East and Llandrindod Wells to the South West, both about a distance of 10 miles from Llanfihangel. Hannah is living in Llanfihangel on the 1881 census, she is a widow and a Charwoman living at Colleys Wife Wood (the name of her abode). Hannah was born in Llandegley, Radnorshire.

Hi All,
I spent many years as a GPO engineer (Technical Officer) in GPO Tel
Exchanges and with contractor installations of all kinds, large and small from 1949
to 1992, and also with MOD and overseas, and with the newer digital Govt
systems in London and all UK by 1985/90 .
There were many old and newer type manual switchboards, with lady operators
generally, but they were dradually phased out after the start of STD
(Subscriber Trunk Dialling) in 1956, opened by Ernest Marples in Bristol I think?
Other systems from UK and overseas slowly merged together to give us
International Trunk Dialling, and then the Internet.......
There was a private National Telephone Co before the Government via the GPO
took it all over, in the interests of National Security before the Boer War
and World War it seems!!.We found old NTC telephone poles still exsisted on the
old 1890 lines to the new Elan Valley Dams near Rhayader, that were removed
in the 1950's!!
I still meet up every year with the engineers I knew in Hereford and Mid
Wales, etc, but many have sadly passed on already. It was always interesting work
in a very wide field in my case, and I still have many old GPO manuals, etc,
some used in the 1930-1949 days and later.....
Digital systems came in as result of Space communications and Satellite
working, and this also gave us all we enjoy in our computers and our emails today.
Very best wishes,
Dennis Cleaton
RAD, Powys.
As an additional interest to those of the younger generation my phone number in 1928 was ESHER 2.
ESHER was a manual exchange of course operated by some very pleasant and helpful girls. On lifting the receiver one would be asked for the number that was required "Number Please". When the operator had connected to the number and received a reply she would say "Putting you through" and you could start your conversation. But this was not all by any means. In later years when my parents had retired to Hove and my sister had married and moved elsewhere in Esher, we both kept in touch with our parents, generally on Sunday evening. It was not unknown to be told when I asked for the Hove number "You need not bother your sister has just phoned them!!"
I fear I struggle with the modern day instruments and cannot remember the differences between the house phone key board and the mobile. It would be great to go back to the old days, I feel sure it would require only a simple computer program to achieve the same result

Dear Listers,
I refer to Alison Bryan's message about the BT-Ancestry.co.uk project to
place old British phone books database on line.
If you wish to comment, e.g. on the usefulness or otherwise of this project,
please remember to DELETE Alison's announcement from your message. It is not
necessary to circulate the details again on the Powys List. Should you wish
to examine them, the details are now in the Powys List archives -
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/POWYS/ and they can also be studied on
Ancestry's own website (go to http://tinyurl.com/g7xn9 and use the 'click
here' link below the search box).
Many thanks for your cooperation.
Kind regards,
John

Ancestry.co.uk and BT Launch British Phone Books, 1880-1984 Online
Ancestry.co.uk in association with BT today launched online the
British phone books, 1880-1984 - the contents of BT's historical phone
book collection.
The first records to be launched are the phone books for Greater
London, which reveal many fascinating insights into the social history
of the past hundred years.
The total collection of the British phone books, 1880-1984 contain in
excess of 250 million names, greater than the English, Welsh and
Scottish Census collections combined. The 430 London books alone
(which include the counties of Surrey, Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent and
Middlesex), contain over 72 million names.
Family history enthusiasts can now find online exactly where their
ancestors once lived, enabling them to build a more detailed picture
of their family history, while social history enthusiasts interested
in the new and fast growing interest of exploring 'hidden house
history' can begin to identify and learn about the previous
inhabitants of their homes.
Members of Ancestry.co.uk can search the British phone books,
1880-1984 by name, year, and county, allowing them to fill in many of
the gaps in their family and house histories left by other traditional
genealogy sources.
BT Archives' collection of phone books is the most complete set of
British telephone directories in existence.
Josh Hanna, Managing Director of Ancestry.co.uk, comments: "The
British phone books, 1880-1984 collection is an important and
fascinating addition to our online records and provides family and
social historians with unique twentieth century information which has
been very difficult to find up until now.
"The British phone books, 1880-1984 collection contain very particular
details about the lives of the famous - and the infamous - including
the likes of Sir Winston Churchill and Bram Stoker.
"Ancestry.co.uk's association with BT has resulted in the vital
preservation of an important archive for family and social historians
alike to use and enjoy."
David Hay, Head of Heritage, BT Archives, comments: "Since their
introduction in 1880, phone books have provided a unique snapshot of
communities in Britain in a regular and familiar format, making them
an ideal source for both family and social historians. BT is committed
to preserving the history of telecommunications and delighted to be
improving access to its heritage through this exciting venture."
The BT collection of phone books are public records up to 1984, the
date of BT's privatisation, and are held and safeguarded on behalf of
the nation by BT Archives. By drawing on Ancestry.co.uk's renowned
expertise and highly developed technology in order to digitise and
make more widely available the British phone books, BT Archives has
found a new way to fulfill its responsibilities to preserve and
promote the UK's telecommunications heritage and provide greater
access to these important records. The modern day successor to the
historical books, The Phone Book from BT, not only contains
traditional residential numbers, but has evolved to become a
comprehensive source of local business and service information.
The British phone books, 1880-1984 represents a major addition to
Ancestry.co.uk's extensive range of sources for family and social
history, offering more records than any other website and securing its
position as the most innovative and accurate resource for family and
social history on the internet.

I will check up on the Deaf Schools in Powys. I think Mr Richards went to
Penarth after the War, from Brynwern Hall - between Newbridge and Builth Road on
the BRE side of the Wye. I remember seeing him around this area, but have
not spoken to my SIL Eileen as yet. Dennis.
I know there was the Llandrindod Wells Residential School - which was
the Deaf School at Llandrindod (not a wartime school). This closed in
the 1970s, was run by Rads CC. The records of this school ... I've
not been able to track down. NLW, Powys Archives, Social Worker in
Llandrindod, British Deaf History Society ... all don't know!
The schools at Rhayader (during wartime), were based at the current
youth hostel and that hotel as you drive out (on the way to
Llandrindod). I forget its name.
Dennis - the two schools you mention, were they wartime schools,
relocated from somewhere else? If so, where.
Do you know anymore about Mr Richards from Dolgellau, and what do you
mean by serving in Italy. You mean the armed forces?
