I wonder if any has the Llanfihangel Bryn Pabuan MI?
I found in Powys Archives earlier in the year that my G3Grandmother came
from there (possibly my G3Grandfather had connections there also). I was
going to have a quick look there on my way away from Powys but I could not
find it on my maps! I know where it is now and might have a chance to look
in there on a trip later in the year so wondered is someone could check the
MI for Samuel BOWEN who married Joan LEWIS in 1798 so he was probably born
some time before 1780.

Hi. The brother of my 3 x gt grandfather was Thomas Morgan a blacksmith who
lived in Crickhowell, Breconshire. Thomas Morgan's son Isaac Morgan
emigrated to America. I have emailed my cousin in the US to see if she knows
of a link. Thomas Morgan was born in Llanbadarn Fawr, CGN son of John
Morgan, farmer and his wife Elizabeth. They lived at Bwlchygeuffordd, Y
Gors, Llanbadarn Fawr. Thomas married Gladys and they had several children.

Hi Martin
Your Samuel Bowen and Joan Lewis feature in the copious pedigrees of the
Lewis family of Llanafan Fawr compiled by David Lewis Wooding in the mid
nineteenth century. Wooding was fascinated by this family - many of whom were
notorious in their day (though not Sam or Joan!!).
Wooding states that Samuel died at Hengenan (a house or farm, I presume, in
LBP) on 17 December 1862 aged 86. Joan died 10 Dec 1859 (she was bapt 22 Dec
1771 so was probably about 88 when she died).
Are you descended from one of their children? I have further information on
this family - if you are interested, please contact me off-list.
Best regards, Ruth
Hi Julie,
Thank you for this information. Last night I ordered, on line, the marriage certificate for Henry and Ann. I will also be studying the GENUKI pages you suggested.
I still have one paternal aunt, 80 years old, living and she has always been interested in her mother's family. My paternal grandma, Ida Morgan Laing Laughlin, always told us just Mary Ann Morgan and 2 sisters came to America. I've been able to take the line farther and was very happy to find the whole family came to America. At first that was a little hard for my aunt to digest but has now excepted the fact that for some reason grandma didn't know the whole story.
Take care.

Subject: Re: [POWYS] (BRE/MON) Henry Morgan
Lona,
Brecon is a town and a parish in the *county* (shire) of Breconshire. Suggest you explore the GENUKI pages for Wales and for England -- chock full of the basics and much more: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/
So, in this case, Crickhowell is the parish in the county of Breconshire. (Breconshire now forms the larger administrative county of Powys, along with Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire but for genealogical purposes, we use the old county names.)
The other birthplaces are Aberystruth and Abergavenny (parishes) in the county of Monmouthshire.
The FreeBMD website will help you to sort out the registration districts which covered these parishes at the time. The GENUKI pages will help explain records before the advent of Civil Registration (July 1837) -- maps of the area, details describing the parishes, etc.
Henry's occupation sounds as though he may have actually been appenticed as a boy to learn the trades of painting and glazing -- these were, I believe, skilled trades. Even in places that were centered on mining or the railroad, skilled workmen with Henry's background were always in great demand.
It's interesting, if the birthplaces are correct, that they appear to have gone back and forth a bit (i.e., 1st & 2nd children born in Abergavenny and the 3rd born back in Breconshire -- perhaps visiting the grandparents at the time?).
It wasn't uncommon at all for couples to wait until near the time of the 1st child's birth to marry -- so long as they married! :-)
Since Ann and Henry were both born in Crickhowell, Breconshire, those records are where you'll be looking for their parents (in the 1841 and later census and in the parish records for Crickhowell), once you have their marriage certificate with their fathers' names and occupations.
You still need to locate the family in the 1851 Census -- probably in Aberystruth but possibly back in Crickhowell -- and it's possible that Henry will be found on his own in 1841. If you don't find Ann at home in 1841 with her parents, it may be difficult to pin her down but the residence on her marriage certificate might help with that.
If you can find their parents' in the 1851 census and later, their birthplaces will be crucial to progressing back in the records -- the 1841 Census only asked people if they were "born in this county?" so the answer was "Y" or "N" (and, in my experience, not to be relied upon as accurate!) and the relationships within the household were not stated.
If anyone on the list comes through with the census material discussed above, that would be helpful. If not, I gather Ancestry.com now has the full complement of Wales census returns that many people are now making use of.
Good luck!

Hi Julie,
Boy, that was dumb of me. :) I've been doing this, not Wales just the U.S., since the 1960's. You would think I would have learned something by now. :) Yes, it does give the birthplaces.
Henry, Ann and Hannah were born in Brecon Crickhowell.
Henry S. and Mary Ann were both born in Monmouth Abergavenny
Elizabeth and Margaret were born in Monmouth Aberystruth
Am I correct in assuming that Brecon is short for Breconshire? Is Breconshire the town and Crickhowell the parish or county?
I checked the web site you suggested and if that is my Henry and Ann they sure didn't rush into the marriage. Wedding date of March 1843 and Henry S. was born May 11, 1843. :)
You ask if Henry was a miner. He list his occupation in the 1861 census as a painter and a glazer. His obituary says "He worked at his trade as a painter in Johnstown [Johnstown, Pennsylvania] until 1866". He then moved to Altoona and his obituary says "He was a master workman". I was told by people in Altoona that during that time period everyone in that area worked for the railroad.
Thank you for your help.

Lona,
If you have the 1861 Census entry, doesn't it state the birthplaces for everyone in the household? The correct spelling is Aberystruth, a parish in Monmouthshire (now Gwent). This was very much a mining area -- was Henry a miner? The 1851 Census would be the best one to obtain and might also be more specific as to birthplaces for both Henry and Ann. This information, coupled with what will be on their marriage certificate, should help you to make some progress.

Gareth,
I looked for my Nicholas B. Edwards for 8 years in the census of Luzerne
County, PA before I found him listed as Nicholas B. Jerman. I knew from his
naturalization that he was there but unable to find him I searched the 1860
census for only 'Nicholas' born in Wales and there he was with Thomas
Jerman. (In census of PA Jerman is spelled many different ways even found
this family listed as Gennan and Jermine.)
Evidently his father Edward Edwards and mother Jane Hamer(Hammond) moved to
PA with 2 sons Thomas and Nicholas B. from Llandiloes in 1851. When Edward
died after arrival Jane married Thomas Jerman (of Llanidloes?)? I do not
believe the 2 sons ever were known by the name Jerman except for the 1860
and 1870 census.
This Thomas Jerman is 40 years old and a coal miner in 1860 census Luzerne
County, Pennsylvania.

Dear List,
I would be grateful for any help that could be provided with my query.
A Thomas Jerman of Llanidloes escaped to New York in 1839 after being
involved in the Chartist rebellion in Llanidloes (I have put some
information on this at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jermanweb/chartism.htm
Presumably no longer fearing arrest, he came back to Llanidloes conveniently
for the 1851 census but not for 1861, by which time he is said to be back in
the US, fighting "before Charleston". I presume this means the South
Carolina city and it is in 1861 that the Civil War is just starting there (I
apologise to American friends if my history is rudimentary).
Could anyone with access to the US 1860 census see if they can find Thomas
Jerman (b1812), wife Sarah (presumed born 1814), children Ann (1841),
William Louchlin (1844), Eleanor (1849).
And is it possible to do the same thing for 1870 to see if he or at least
his family are still alive?
I presume it is quite likely he could have been killed in the war; does
anyone know of any death records that could be inspected? And could anyone
give a view on what side he would be likely to be fighting? I have a
feeling it would be for the North. He probably didn't know it but distant
cousins of his - also Jermans from Llanidloes - had also migrated to New
York and were also involved in some way in the Civil war - see
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jermanweb/migrationusa2.htm Could anyone with
greater knowledge of the Civil War than me could advise how and why they
feel these "immigrants" were included into the war? Did they just sign up
to get a job?
Thanks for any help/advice
Gareth Jones

Gareth,
A search of a Civil War site shows 4 Thomas Jermans, one of which was in
a New York Regiment. But based on the regiments history not sure if this
fits
your family.
Go to web site www.itd.nps.gov/cwss to see this data, and to search for
family. This is a National Park Service web site. Data is based on records
in the
US National Archives. If you find family that was in the Civil War you can
get copies of their war records from the Archives. I can help you with
information about the archives web site and ordering records.
Regards fighting in Charleston, the Civil War started in Charleston, but
the only Union forces were in Fort Sumter which was fire upon and ended up
surrendering. The next fighting that took place around Charleston was at the
very
end of the war. The New York Regiment would not have been in Charleston at
any time during the war.

Some family trees have beautiful leaves,
but some just have a bunch of nuts.
Remember it's the nuts that make the tree worth shaking
Hello List,
Sorry to repost this but, I didn't see it pop up in the archives and I want
it out there in case someone sees it in the future...

I'm new to the group. I had some good results on Ancestry UK with the 1841
census and my LEWIS family. I had only known that my Samuel had a father
named Edward for years... Then Samuel popped up in 1861prior to coming to
the states living with his sister, and that helped me find them in 1841.

I'm thinking the mother and father died prior to 1851... Some of the
children seem to be around but, I'm not sure if it is really them... Are
there any records on-line for Old Radnor? There are other LEWIS families on
the same census area in 1841but, I'm not sure if they are related... Does
this connect with anyone on the list?
Best Regards, Bill Kemp, Florida...
