I've just looked up the 1861 Drovers. There is no-one occupying the
building & a note stating
"No person sleeps in this place (plan?) by night although it is occupied by
day"
There are no obvious candidates for a tenant in the farms listed alongside
it.
I'll not post the file to the list but if anyone wants it I can send it to
them.
Andrew
Hello Martin
I had seen a posting of yours about a year ago and initially thought we were
looking at the same Thomas. My Thomas EVANS who lived at the Drovers Arms in
Maesmymis was born in Llysdinam.
He was born on 20 May 1849 at Lluestnewydd in Llysdinam the son of Joseph
EVANS and Eleanor DAVIES. He married Carolina WILLIAMS on 4 May 1872 and
from the mid 1880s they lived at the Drovers Arms the subject of this
original discussion.
Sorry I can't help you Martin regarding the addresses though.

Clement Pritchard was the tenant back then. I've emailed you a link
off-list.

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded
onto my website, feature the following subjects:
1. The remains of the former Ynyscedwyn Ironworks between Ystalyfera dn
Ystradgynlais in the county of Breconshire (one picture). This was one of
the very first features shown on my website in November 1997.
2. Scenes showing sheep in the Welsh landscape at various locations in the
counties of Breconshire and Glamorgan (seven pictures). This feature was
first shown on my website in March 1998.
As usual, these features will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at

Kind regards,
John

For those with ancestors around the Llyn Vyrnwy area there was just
now an interesting programme on Australian radio about the drowning
of Llanwddyn and how little is remembered locally about the conflict
over that.
See:
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/arts/radioeye/stories/s1375727.htm
Should be available over the web in a few days from the ABC site.

Just a reminder of a little known message site run by Powys Record Office. I
came across it quite by chance a couple of years ago, while browsing with
Google. I have failed to access it from the Powys Record office site ie
http://archives.powys.gov.uk/ (which for anyone who hasn't used it, is very
good in its own right!)
The site can be accessed by typing "Powys Archives BBS" into "Google" or use
its official web address, ie http://archives.powys.gov.uk/forumvx/. I have
had quite a bit of luck with it. I feel that the more researchers that know
about it the better!
For anyone who would like to find out more about Drovers Arms, Mynydd Epynt,
BRE, go into the following websites by putting the following info into
"google"
"Aerial photograph of the Drover's Arms, Merthyr Cynog, 1998" - for a good
view of Drovers Arms as a military billet today.
"history.powys.org.uk/school1/llanwrtyd/routes.shtml" - for information on
the history of droving, Drovers Arms and the area occupied by Drovers Arms.
All the best to all,
Hilary Williams
FYI, Shropshire Family History Society will be in attendance at the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society's "Open Day" at the New Community Centre, Llansantffraid on Sat, June 25th 2005.

Hi Robert,
It might be a different Richard Jones.
Your Richard Jones was b.1835 in Cardigan.
Noelene's Richard Jones was sentenced to 7 years in prison in 1836 in
Manafon, Montogomeryshire, probably for something fairly serious but she
didn't offer any details.
Jones is/was quite popular around here!
Cheers, Tony

I have been informed that the following indexes have been added to the North Wales BMD website - it's at: www.northwalesbmd.org.uk
Newtown Registration District:
Civil Marriages:
1838 - 1918
(6,082 marriages)
A reminder that the term "civil marriages" covers marriages in register offices; and also, until 1898, marriages in *all* nonconformist chapels and Roman Catholic churches.
The Registrar was required to be present at all these ceremonies, and he/she recorded them all in the same register - hence they are all described as "civil" marriages.
After 1898, it was possible for nonconformist chapels and Roman Catholic churches to appoint an "Authorised Person", who attended the marriage service and entered the details into the register. However, take-up of this option seems to have been rather slow; and most chapel
and RC marriages continued to require the registrar to be present for many years. In fact, many have never taken up the "Authorised Person" option.
Many thanks to my team of volunteers, who have photocopied, transcribed, and checked these index books; and to the staff of Newtown Register Office, for
their support of the project.

Hello Robert
I only have a little information about Richard Jones my Gr.Gr.Gr.Grandfather.
There are similarities to your Richard Jones, but I will list what I have so
far and you can judge for yourself:
I have his birth date as 11.1.1794 baptised 19.1.1794 In Denbighshire.
Possible marriage to Anne Badger 25.1.1828 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
On 1841 Census Richard 40-44, labourer, Ann 40-44 Wife
Children are John, Mary, Eliza, Frederick, George and Edwin.
On 1851 Census Richard 55 is a Widower
Children John, Mary, Eliza, Frederick, George, Edwin.
Somewhere between 1841 and 1851 Ann has died, but I have five possible
deaths for Anne Jones - 2 in June 1845, 3 in 1847.
All children have been born in Shrewsbury.
Edwin is the branch I am following - Later on Edwin Jones (Richards son)
lived in Llanyfyllin and Machynlleth (Station Master).
Edwin Richard Jones (Edwin's son) born in Shrewsbury went to live in Newtown
and my Grandfather John Ferguson Jones (Edwin Richard Jones's son) was born
in Newtown, Montgomeryshire.
The other children could have gone to Utah, but Edwin definately did not.
I need to study your information thoroughly, I have been out for the day and
I have 22 emails so I will send this to you for now and see if you can make
any sense of it.
Another coincidence is that one of my other branches that I am searching in
Caernarvonshire, my Gr.Grandfather is Robert Williams would you believe.
All for now Robert - Best wishes Shirley

This is very interesting. Andrew do email Hilary as she has lots of
information meanwhile I'm going to try and work out where you fit in. So
was Clement Pritchard your great great grandfather I can never get these
greats right! I take it you are descended through Catherine Pritchard?
I have just finished reading An Uprooted Community and have seen the picture
of Caroline with her son.
Feel free to contact me off list if you wish to as I don't want to clog up
the board with the Drovers Arms (not that it is busy).
