Hello John,
I have noted with interest the good advice offered in response to your
question. However, I feel that I should point out that it is not necessary
to visit Kew to inspect these army records; they are also available for
inspection via your local LDS Family History Centre. You do not mention the
name of your ancestor, but as you are researching the name HUGHES, I will
use this as an example.
WO 361 Records. These are known as the "Unburnt documents".
These files are organised alphabetically by surname and given name.
Information includes unit name and number, birthplace, age at time of
enlistment and name and address of next of kin and may include names of
parents, spouses and children. The surname HUGHES is contained in boxes
numbered from 5698 to 5733 inclusive.
For the names
Alfred C. HUGHES to Burnett HUGHES, your require LDS film 2028744
Cecil C. HUGHES to Douglas H. HUGHES, film 2028745
Edgar F. HUGHES to Ernest W. HUGHES, film 2028746
Evan HUGHES to George HUGHES, film 2029488
George HUGHES to Henry HUGHES, film 2029489
Henry HUGHES to James HUGHES, film 2029490
James HUGHES to John HUGHES, film 2029498
John HUGHES to John Joseph HUGHES, film 2029499
John Joseph HUGHES to Louis B. HUGHES, film 2029500
Louis O. HUGHES to Pryce HUGHES, film 2029501
Ralph HUGHES to Samuel HUGHES, film 2029502
Samuel HUGHES to Thomas HUGHES, film 2029503
Thomas HUGHES to William HUGHES, film 2029504
William HUGHES to William H. HUGHES, film 2029505
William J. HUGHES to Wynddyn HUGHES, film 2029506
WO 363 Records. These are known as the "Burnt Documents".
About 70% of these records were destroyed during the Blitz in World War ll.
Many of the remaining damaged records can be read. To the best of my
knowledge, those filmed so far, are: -
A-E; F; N-O, Q and T, which suggests that the surname HUGHES has not been
filmed or maybe even salvaged.
WO 364 Records. These are known as the "Third Collation", which is made up
of misplaced records, which could not be returned to their correct location.
These files are organised alphabetically by surname and given name. The
films you would require are as follows: -
Walter HUDSON to John HUGHES, film 2112568
John HUGHES to Edward Thomas HULATT, film 2112569.
I hope this helps,
Glyndwr (Glyn) Davies,
Chatham, Kent, UK.

The first source to check are known as the 'Unburnt Records' WO364 at the
Public Records Office. Apparently the vast majority of the records of the
'ranks' of WW1 were burnt in the blitz of WW2 and I believe the above have
been put together from those of the Ministry of Pensions.

Hi Kevin,
I presume Kent is actually Kerry, a village about 10/12 miles by
road from Llandinam.

Kent is the name of an English county.
According to the GENUKI Gazetteer at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/gaz there is no other place called
Kent in the whole of England or Wales.

Kevin, you don't mean Kent in the south of England do you? The only reason
I ask is that I have ppl who were born in Cranbrook Kent but the rest of the
family in Radnorshire in Wales. They then lived in Wales and I wondered if
it was a mishearing of the enumerater or did ppl travel to Kent in England?

Lloyd,
You really are most vindictive to me, why?. My postings to Powys list
do not convey any malice whatsoever to Powys FHS. I have received Emails
of support. I maintain my postings are constructive criticism and these
Emails confirm this.
Personal vendetta? What utter rubbish! Vendetta (Blood feud?).
I don't understand your Gwent FHS reference to Gloucester :-

I fully appreciate your mention of Mike MacSorley and David Leitch. I
see Mike occasionally at Powys FHS lunch mainly and without his project
and publishing expertise, Powys FHS would find it very hard going .
Unfortunately I never got to meet David Leitch. I speak to Sheila Leitch
and she have told me at FHS Open days of his great involvement. Everyone
I speak to held him in high esteem. People like Mike and David only come
along once in a lifetime, for sure.
Sheila Leitch has given me permission to film Parish registers for
transcription by Powys FHS. Her talents are also immeasurable It was
actually my posting to Powys Rootsweb list that started the ball rolling
for volunteer PR transcribers.

Yes, I read Cronicl from front to back, don't miss a thing. It is
undoubtedly the finest Journal, in Wales at least. The transcribers you
mention include my wife and myself. See 1841 census acknowledgements on
CD. One of Mike's nice touches is that he always gives credit to his
volunteers. Brenda is saddened by your outrageous rant in private and
Powys list Emails to myself, but that will not deter her from
transcribing. She has almost completed her quota of Machynlleth 1901
census for Powys FHS.

We both joined Powys FHS in December 2001 actually. Why should I attend
the AGM? The 'issues' you mention have only just taken place.
You wrote:-

That is your choice! It doesn't worry me, and your comment that the
Emails you posted to me is your view, and not that of Powys FHS
officers. This is my last Email on the list on this subject.

Dear List,
I am trying to trace any descendants of Lewis and Martha (nee JONES) EVANS of Llanidloes via the family members that remained in Montgomeryshire.
Lewis and Martha's eldest son Lewis (bap. 1808) married Jane Owen in 1832 and had a son Lewis in 1837 (my ancestor). At the time of the 1851 census Lewis, Jane and Lewis junior were missing from the family home in Church Street, Llanidloes where their eldest daughter Jane (bap. 1834) was enumerated as daughter of the head of the household. Jane was looking after her younger siblings Thomas (born 1840) and Winifred (born 1843). Lewis junior was in Monmouthshire by at least 1860 but there is no trace of him or his parents in the 1851 census of Monmouthshire. I do not know what became of Jane and Winifred but Thomas stayed in Llanidloes and married Martha, producing 2 children - Martha, born circa 1868 and Edward born circa 1879. Thomas was dead by 1881.
Lewis and Martha also had a son John (bap. 1814) and a son David (bap. 1821) who both remained in Llanidloes. John married Elizabeth Owen in 1837 and had children Elizabeth (1837), Martha (1838), John (c. 1845), Edward (c. 1848) and Richard (1850). David married Mary Morris in 1850 and had children Mary (1850), John (c. 1854), David (c. 1857), Mary (c. 1860) and Richard (c. 1868). All were born in Llanidloes so there is a good chance that there are still descendants in the area.
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans

Thanks to Hilary, Alison and Kevin who replied and anyone else who I have

One of the Powys FH group, John Ball has a website, from which he makes
available photos and descriptions of different parts of Wales on a rolling
basis i.e. a particular set of photos etc but only there to be viewed &
downloaded for a week, then it's a different set. Over the years, he has
shown the Llanbister photos on several occasions. Unfortunately I have not
copied these photos to file but they will certainly be shown again on John's
website. They consist of various photos of the old church St Cynllo first
established in the 6th century, the graveyard attached, and the village,
together with a description of each.
=============
Dear Sandy,
As Richard correctly points out, I have shown photographs of St Cynllo's
Church at Llanbister a number of times on the 'Retrospective Images of
Wales' feature on my website -- the last occasion was in March 2004.
The photos are not scheduled for a future showing at present because they
have not been requested recently. If you wish the photo's to be displayed in
the future please submit your request through my Webpage Archive at
http://home.clara.net/wfha/walespic/retro/
Kind regards,
John

Hi Sue
I'm not sure whether this will assist you or not but if not it may give you
or someone else on this list an idea how to discover Ann's maiden name.
My great grandfather was married in the army in 1887. First I obtained his
children's birth certificates and from that I got his army marriage
cert/record quoting his army number. Fortunately his wife's maiden name was
listed. You should find the name of the church were they were married and
that way you can obtain the civil certificate if you were lucky and they had
a civil wedding. It can be more tricky if your researching in Ireland.
Personally, I can't see why the army haven't got Ann's maiden name have you
tried ringing them?
Pressumably you know which regiment he was in and perhaps you could look at
that. Try its helpful http://www.regiments.org/ and then maybe the museum.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

Does anyone have cemetery transcriptions for the St. Harmon area?????
I'm looking for Hookers and Whittalls,
Thanks,

PS Thanks for helping me find the Lingen Farm.
Hi to all,
My name is Trevor Griffiths and I live in Australind, West Australia. I haven't been on the list for quite a while so thought I would re-introduce myself.
I'm after some suggestions, I have Naomi GRIFFITHS b. 2 March 1890 in Guilsfield, and she is in the 1891 census living with parents David and Fanny GRIFFITHS.
But after that she doesn't get a mention in the Welsh 1901 census, and being only 11 years old I would have thought she would still be living at home.
I have looked in the 1901 English census for her still no sign.
I have checked the M.I. 's for Guilsfield and she doesn't show there either.
I have run out of ideas on where she might be, can anyone out there help?
All the best from
Trevor in wet Australind.
