It's their OK Malcolm. Situated on the junction of the A483 & B4392 north of
Welshpool. The main part of the village is on the B4392, but bits of it
straggle along the A483 including my cousin's cottage which was the old
railway station. Arddleen is a bit of a funny village, but I remember it
does have a pub as I had to call in there once, but I think it is the sort
of place that people motor through without actually knowing they've done it.
Incidentally it does have 2 ds in it, the above is not a mis-spelling.
Best wishes
Vera

Thanks Ruth,
Margaret Harvey will want to see it I think! I have just been reading of
another murder not far away on the Epynt hills towards Brecon, that were cleared
of farms and many people in 1940 for the present Army Firing Range. This is
well described with lists of farms and people in a little book by Ronald Davies
"Epynt Without People" published by Y Lolfa Press, Talybont, Cardiganshire,
in 1984, but out of print now.
I woman of 38 with three children, and expecting another, was murdered in
her bed by her lover at night. He left the house early, but was hunted down by
local people and arrested. He was tried at Brecon and then hanged.
Be careful if you have lovers in Breconshire......
Yrs, Dennis
Dear Ruth,
Perhaps they were Navy people, with Nelson and others? I have seen references
to Chelsea Pensioners in the MGY census lists, and some from MGY were known
to be at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. Trafalgar was fought 200 years ago
this year, with big celebrations due in the UK at Portsmouth, etc.
Best wishes for St Davids Day too.....
Yrs, Dennis
Dear Alison Skipper, Tricia & All
You may be interested in the S4C genealogy prog at 4.25 today - called Hel
Achau. It contains an item about the goings on (murders etc) in Llanafan Fawr.
This is a repeat of the Wed prog & the last in the series. I haven't seen
any of them, as I can't get S4C here, but I hope to see the LLF item on a video
at some point.
It's in Welsh which is a bit of a drawback for some of us!! It may have
subtitles, though.
Best regards, Ruth
Dear All
I have been doing some work on Gibraltar censuses yesterday & found an ASHTON
family in Gib as early as 1777. The appear on the 1791 census as
Joseph 64
Elizabeth 50 wife
Francis 38 son
Joseph 36 son
Joseph & Elizabeth were born in Britain - no details of where. I just
wondered whether the members of this List who are researching ASHTONS know if any of
their people went to Gibraltar.
PS - for Alison Bryan - did you get the Will transcript I sent you?
Best regards, Ruth
Hi Rina,
There are two William Hamers aged 4 listed under Rhayader in the Rads 1841
Census CD by Powys FHS, both born in Rads:-
One listed at Stoney Park, NG/f 7/p7, Nantmel
One listed at Talare, HR/f 8/p10, St Harmon
Both places had large Hamer families, do you have any other siblings/parents
names?
My Gt Granmother was a Mary Jane Hamer/Evans from Rhayader!!

Hi Lizzie,
I worked with HMT in the Westminster area in the late 1980's, and the site of
the old Victorian Prison was by the river Thames at Vauxhall Bridge south
side. A plaque on the old wall there says prisoners were transported from that
site to you in OZ, with some from Wales I have read.
Best regards,

According to the book "A Study of Montgomeryshire Place-Names" the Welsh name
is "Yr Ardd-lin", meaning Flax Garden. Flax was much grown and processed in
the Severn valley in olden times, and I always think it is a lovely name.
This small book is very good with 180 pages, by Richard Morgan in the Welsh
Heritage (No 10) series by Garreg Gwalch, Llanrwst, N.Wales, LL26 0EH. Cost is
£4.95 plus pp. ISBN: 0-86381-699-1

The entries are listed under the individual registration offices and not
collectively under the county of Montgomeryshire. They are all there and the
work done in getting them all recorded is a tremendous achievement by Bryn
and the team that the have all been recorded so quickly.

I understand from Vic Roberts, the project co-ordinator, that permission has
been given to record the registers from Radnorshire and Brecknockshire too,
but that the project is unable to pursue the project into those old counties
because they don't have sufficient volunteers living locally who can go into
the offices and photocopy the index books:-(
All the best

Hi Robert,
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about this branch
of the family yet to know if we have a possible
connection - but I'll keep your details in mind.
Thanks for replying

Hello listers
I didn't realise that names were included in the 1841 census.
I should be grateful if someone who has access to the same could look for a Joseph EVANS born around 1827, I believe he was either born in Breconshire or Radnorshire I'm sorry that I can't provide any more information than that.
Thanks in anticipation.
Lesley
Hello,
Can I request a look-up in the 1841 census of
Radnorshire for William Hamer born circa 1837.
His father is Richard Hamer (dob unknown) who
is probably a labourer. Unfortunately, I have
no info about where in Radnorshire this family
might be found.
Many thanks in anticipation
Rina

Hello Alwyn and Powys List
Could I give my heartfelt thanks to Bryn, Vic and Jen Roberts and Dafydd and
others who have been chasing around all the Registry Offices in North and
Mid-Wales, at first photocopying the books and now taking digital photos.
I'm currently transcribing Bangor Deaths and Jen Roberts's fingers are on
every page - lovely nails, Jen :-) They have given up a tremendous amount of
time and used personal equipment for the project. We should all be forever
grateful to them.

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded
onto my website, feature the following subjects:
1. The village of Blaina in the county of Breconshire (five pictures). This
feature was first shown on my website in February 1999.
2. Parish Church at Trelech Grange in the county of Monmouthshire (seven
pictures). This feature was first shown on my website in May 1998.
These two features will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at
http://home.clara.net/wfha/walespic/retro/retro.htm
Kind regards,
John

Tony and Lizzie,
(Apologies for the length of this response but it seemed unavoidable in
order to include the census entries.)
A search for Ashton families in Trefeglwys ("Tref-Eglwys") in the 1881
Census turns up 7 Ashton households shown below. Someone with a keener
local knowledge than I may be able to figure out which one fits the cottage
in the photo (note the hillside up the back of the cottage -- maybe an
identifier).
I hesitate to "claim" the more recent Ashton's as my own connection is to
one Elizabeth Ashton (b.? d. 1671) who married Thomas Bennett (1600-1672) of
Llwydiarth, Llandinam, via their daughter, Anne Bennett (1638-1674) who was
the 1st wife of Christopher Hall (1633-1716) of Penddol. Their dau.
Margaret Hall (1673-1752) married David Lloyd (d.1707) of Cefnbarrach,
Trefeglwys. (Note: All of the foregoing comes from the Richard Bennett
papers and I haven't fleshed this out, myself. I have no idea, for
instance, of the parentage of my Elizabeth Ashton!)
Tony, I've been to Rhyd-y-carw as there's a legend in our family that our
original DAVIES brothers were said to have gone there from Cardiganshire
(perhaps to work) sometime before 1818. I also obtained a photocopy of a
sketch of the place from one of the Montgomeryshire Collections issues
featuring the old black-and-white homes in Montgomeryshire. Fine sketches
of these old places if you have the time to locate them -- the Newtown Area
Library keeps them under "lock and key" but makes them available to serious
researchers.
