Hello All:-
If any of you know any descendants of the GORNALL family who settled in
Berriew and Wrexham around 1790 I would appreciate it if you would put them
in touch with me. There will be a GORNALL GATHERING of ALL GORNALL FAMILIES
here on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, NEXT JUNE 2005. I hope to see
some of the Gornalls from Wales here. The Welsh Gornalls descend from a
James Gornall who married Elizabeth Robinson in London and they moved to
Berriew in about 1803 which was the year they were married. They are
ancestors of mine. If anyone has a source of lookups for the 1841 and 1851
Census of Berriew I would certainly appreciate any help could get in
locating these early Welsh Gornalls on those Census records.
Thank you

Hi Chris,
My Cleaton family all came from the Llanidloes/Newtown/ Kerry /Dolfor area,
and I have CD and other MGY census records, etc. Have you seen the Powys FHS
1851 census CD that should include your people? I can check it if you wish.
Best wishes,
Dennis Cleaton
Rads, Powys.
Hi Tricia,
I think we looked at this? There was a well known Colonel Patterson here from
WW1 days, with a French wife who only died recently. I do'nt know if he was
born here, and I remember him well at the British Legion here in 1953, he was a
former County Surveyor in Radnorshire.
Dennis, in Rads.
Hi Elysia,
This is the one that I am looking for, so thank you very much for your help,
it is much appreciated. If it is not too much trouble I would be grateful for
the copy please, my computer seems to playing up at the moment, and as I went
to reply to you it "lost" the Powys list and I cannot find the correspondence
in the archive. How these things get lost in black holes on the computer is
beyond me! I am so sorry to put you to this added trouble.
Many thanks for your patience,
Kind Regards
Tricia

Hello Lorraine,
I have family that originated in Kerry and I have lived in Perth, WA for
many years. Have you found the births and marriage of Sarah and Richard and
the baptism of your gg-grandfather? Try the IGI first online if you haven't
done so already:
www.familysearch.org click on 'search' then 'international genealogical
index'. If you find them you can then look for siblings whose descendants
may still be in Wales. You will learn how it all works as you try this.
Once you get some ideas from the IGI you can go to a LDS (Mormon) Family
History Centre and order a film of the original records - eg the Kerry
Parish records. This often shows you more than you can see online. Perth is
well-endowed with FHCs and films take about 3 weeks to come at a cost of $4
or 5. You view them at the centre by booking a machine in advance. The
people there are very helpful. The FHC I know is in Bicton but I am sure
there is one nearer to you.
As Dave says both the PFHS and MGS are very helpful and give you a good start.
Best wishes,
Mary

Have you considered joining the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society and the
Powys Family History Society ?
Subscriptions are very reasonable and are well worth it if only for the
wonderful magazines which they produce.

Welcome to the Powys List !
I'm sure you'll find many friends who are only too willing to help you in
your search. I live in Yorkshire in Northern England but all my mother's
family came from Carno and Newtown in Montgomeryshire.

Hi Everyone,
I am following up on a lead provided by another lister and would be grateful
for any help in finding John PATTERSON and his family. John was born in
Abbeycwmhir ca 1852 and married Margaret JAMES in December 1876 in Nantmel. I
think I have them in 1881 in Cefnllys and then I think I have John, remarried on
the 1901 census also in Cefnllys. I cannot find the children of the first
marriage though. I would be grateful for details of the entry for 1891 if
possible please.
Many thanks,
Tricia Heseltine

Think my original letter has cyperspaced itself, to this may be a duplicate.
Gogie/Gogwia/Cw-gia
Maybe another spelling:
1861 RG9/4252 folio 85, as enumerated:
Bank
Heath
Court
Cwmearl
Crex
QUIRG or QUIRY or QAIRG/Y (head Richard James farmer of 95 acres)
New House
Cwm (Cwmlr)
Cwm
Cwm again
Tynycoed starts folio 86.
note: my interpretation of handwriting.
Jo. Shropshire.
Hello List,
I have received many suggestions and as a result it would
appear we are looking in the wrong place.
I will have to go back to Samuel's birthplace and start again.
May I thank the list for their help, and all the best.
Dennis.

Hi Angela
You might like to compare the 1891 census with the 1881 census data
that you received from Margaret Harvey.

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' features, just uploaded onto my
website, focus on:
1. The remains of the Roman fortress at Caerleon, Monmouthshire, including
the amphitheatre, which seated 6,000 spectators, and the nearby barracks for
5,500 troops. This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in November
2000 (nine pictures).
2. Scenes in the valleys of the Upper and Lower Clydach rivers, tributaries
of the River Tawe in the county of Glamorgan. This feature was first shown
on 'Images of Wales' in May 1998 (six pictures).
