Dear Listers,
A study undertaken by Michael Whitfield Foster in the late 1990s
reinforces Julie Preston's advice (above) to Denise (at
downes01(a)btinternet.com) about the pitfalls of relying on the GRO
marriage index.
The results of Foster's research were published in the book "A Comedy of
Errors, or The Marriage Records of England and Wales 1837 - 1899" by
Michael Whitfield Foster, first published in 1998; ISBN 0-473-05581-3.
A second volume "A Comedy of Errors, Act 2" (ISBN 0-473-07480-X)
published in 2002 includes references to records of births and deaths.
You'll find details of both these publications and a brief summary of
the findings at http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/mikefost/
Kind regards,
John

On the subject of the above I too came across someone with the middle name of Maldwyn and he was from Birmingham so maybe he or his ancesters originated from Wales!
I am trying to help a recently discovered relation with another branch
of her tree. It may be easier if I put the facts down that she already
has:
Her grandmother was born Elizabeth Jane EVANS, 26 Jan 1895 - RD Hay
(copy of short birth cert. obtained in 1948) Elizabeth Jane BROWN (same
person) married Edgar Walter HINES 15 July 1912 in the Parish of
Llangorse.
On a copy of the marriage cert. her age is stated as 20, residence at
time of marriage Tryclay, Llangorse, father John BROWN, Occ. Brewer. She
could only have been 17, could she have given a false surname as well as
adding 3 years to her age? The groom was age 21, occ. Labourer,
residence at time of marriage Trephilip, father William HINES, Occ. Cab
Driver. The two witnesses were George SEVENOAKS & Ancel (?) BROOKE. She
married her 2nd husband in 1918 claiming to be a widow but there is no
record of Edgar's death on "1837-online" between 1913 & 1918 or on the
Commonwealth War Graves website.
On the 1901 census I have found an Eliza BROWN, age 6, born Llangorse (I
think in the RD of Brecknock), father John BROWN.
Evidently she had always assumed her surname was BROWN until 1948 when
she asked for her birth certificate and saw her name was Elizabeth Jane
EVANS. I have a copy of the certificate and it is dated 23 Sept 1948, so
she must have obtained if from the PRO.
Can anyone help unravel this mystery. Any suggestions or theories would
be greatly appreciated.
If I have spelt any of the names incorrectly please forgive me as I am
unfamiliar with Welsh names.
Here's hoping!

Dear Douglas, Would you be kind enough to do a look up for me please. I have
a CHARLOTTE AMELIA WHISKIN aged about 30 and HENRY WHISKIN who I think lived
in Llanidloes. Their son Henry died in 1884 and was buried in his
grandparent's grave in Llandinam aged just a few months. Henry may have been
a vet. TIA Margaret

Good evening - a book called DISCOVERING WELSH ROOTS:A HISTORY OF THE GOODWIN FAMILY by Dr James Whetter was reviewed in the Hereford Times today.
Does anybody know where I can obtain a copy of this book - I think it would make a fascinating read for a lot of us.

hi everyone.
is there such a thing as an un-registered marriage?????
please can I put the following to to list and ask for advice?
we have been searching without any joy for the marriage between
Mary Ann PARKER, to Richard RODEN
for years.
without it I can go no further back than my grandmother,
on the 1881 census.
The family were at Corporation gardens Shrewsbury, this was also where my
grandmother was born.
Mary ann RODEN, b 1882. parents Richard RODEN . Mary ann RODEN formerly
Parker.
eldest son George, b 1872 in Wolstanton, his birth cert also said Richard &
Mary ann RODEN were parents, she again formerly parker.
I followed this until Richard RODEN 's
death in Shrewsbury on 18.4.1886.age 46. Mary ann RODEN is named as widow on
the death certificate also.
1891 census
she is in Castle Forgate.
a widow, aged 43 born Manchester
children still with her are,
George, age 19,b Burslem. William, age 16,b Tunstall.Richard,age 11, b
Shrewsbury, Mary ann age 9. b Shrewsbury, Henry age 1 b Shrewsbury.
(he died the year after)
she re married 11.6.1894 in Shrewsbury. Henry Alfred PACKWOOD
she Mary ann RODEN, widower age 45.
1901 census . she is a widower again, living with Richard RODEN son. in
Shrewsbury,
now my question is all the information sways towards the pair having
married,
and is the same mary Ann RODEN be it her age does change somewhat.
somewhere around 1872.we have searched forward and backwards with no luck
has anyone any ideas
as to why we cant find them .
Thanks Denise
