No problems up to 1881 census but after that I have lost this family and have
searched all over for them but no luck. They were at Llywyntidman Mill,
Llanymynech but obviously flown the coop by 1991 and just wondered as a long
shot whether any listers old and new might be able to connect with any
members of this family who`s ancestral roots are in Llanyblodwel SAL.

Hi Lloyd and Barrie,
Thanks for trying to help me in my search for Isaac VAUGHAN's father Charles.
Unfortunately I don't know where Isaac was born as he only gives Brecknock as place of birth on 1881 census. Following on from the 1851 census I have found Isaac living in Mynyddislwyn in 1861 and 1871. He was married from Mynyddislwyn and then moved to Mountain Ash.
What I really need is to find is his father Charles who was a quarryman and hopefully this would give me a clue as to where Isaac was born. If Charles is not on the 1851census for Brecon then perhaps I need to look on the 1841 census. As Isaac was born abt 1836 I should find him with his parents........somewhere in Brecon!
Thanks again for your interest
Pat
Hi. My name is Sandra Jones and I am trying to trace my family tree. My
great grandfather, James Davies was born in South Wales in 1846.
Unfortunately, That is all I know about him. He supposedly jumped ship here
in Australia, what date I do not know. He married Jane Edwards In 1872 in
Brookstown NSW, they had a family and stayed around the Wallsend area. From
the time he was born till the time he was married I know nothing about him.
If there is information you can pass on to me, or if you know where I can
obtain more information, I would be truly grateful. Thank you Sandra Jones.
Hi Pat,
Lloyd seems to have found Isaac and brother in Dukestown. This is
present day Tredegar, Gwent as you might already know. As Lloyd
mentioned they are shown as just born Brecon, no village, etc. There
other Charles Vaughans as possible father in other parts of 1851 census,
but Isaac and Chales, possibly brothers are lodging in Dukestown and
have left the fold.
Have you any details of marriages, etc. that you know, or where the
family settled, etc?
all the best
Barrie Jones, Gwent

Hello Val,
I am a little confused by the data in your line of enquiry. You state that
Walter Robert LEIGH served in the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire
Regiment at the battle of Isandwandana and alternatively Isandanqwana. Do
you mean Isandhlwana? If so, this battle took place on the 22nd January
1879 and mainly involved the 24th Regiment (The South Wales Borderers). It
is a prominent hill in western Zululand, 10 miles east of Rorke's Drift on
the Buffalo River.
In these circumstances, to the best of my knowledge, your reference to the
2nd Warwick's cannot be correct. The 2nd Battalion was serving in India in
1878 until they were posted to Ceylon in 1891. The 1st Battalion was also
in India in 1867 before being moved to Aden in 1879, then England 1880. The
1st Battalion did take part in the Second Sudan War of 1898.
Regiments that served in the South Africa / Zulus War were as follows: -
1877-79
South Wales Borderers; Cameronians; Connaught Rangers.
1878-79
Somerset Light Infantry; South Staffordshire.
1879
King's Dragoon Guards; 17th Lancers; Buffs; King's Own; Royal Scots
Fusiliers; Northamptonshire; Middlesex; King's Royal Rifle Corps; Wiltshire;
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
A list of campaign medals issued for the above conflict "South Africa
1878-1879" can be found in PRO class reference WO 32/7682, 7764.
Hoping this may clarify your line of approach to the problem.

Hello to all,
I am new to this list, from Denville, NJ. I am
searching for my grandfathers family, his name was
Thomas Ivor Clifford Rogers. I believe that I might
have found his birth on the Civil Reg Index in March
of 1898 in Llanelly, now LLanelli? Does anyone have
anyway to confirm this for me? He is my brick wall
and it's driving me mad!! Thanks Sarah. Ps. In the
index it's listed as Rogers thomas clifford.

Che'rie,
Is this the family you're interested in, from the 1851 Census, Parish of
Trefeglwys, Montgomeryshire?
EVANS Richard h m 33 Fmr. 18a MGY Trefeglwys Tynsarn /f347/p2
EVANS Ann w m 34 Fmr.'s wife MGY Carno Tynsarn /f347/p2
EVANS Mary d u 8 MGY Trefeglwys Tynsarn /f347/p2
EVANS Richard s u 6 MGY Trefeglwys Tynsarn /f347/p2
EVANS Charles s u 3 MGY Trefeglwys Tynsarn /f347/p2
EVANS Ann d u 1 MGY Trefeglwys Tynsarn /f347/p2
I checked the Monumental Inscriptions for Trefeglwys (Parish Church) and it
appears Richard died January 1, 1857, age 40, while his wife lived on until
May 13, 1888, age 71. (Monument #150 -- Slate headstone with footstone).
Note: On the inscription, the abode is named "Tyisa'r Ffinant, Trefeglwys".
Ann is shown in the 1881 Census entry below, living with her son, Charles
and his family. As she was an "annuitant", it would be interesting to find
out who was paying for her annuity -- perhaps something set up by your
Richard? Her husband died so young, I doubt he would've left her much but
it's possible the farm was sold and enough was left for her to live out her
days. (Even though it's stated here that Ann's birthplace was Trefeglwys, I
would trust the earlier census information and presume she was born in
Carno -- really just the adjoining parish.)

Civil Registration began July 1837. The quickest way to resolve the
question of Ann's maiden name would be to order the birth certificate of
Richard (or any of the children) directly from the Superintendent Registrar
at Newtown, Montgomeryshire, providing the year of birth, parents' names,
house/farm name (Tynsarn), parish (Trefeglwys). Ann's maiden name will be
stated on the birth certificate. You could take a chance and order the
marriage certificate for Richard and Ann at the same time -- estimate they
married about 1842/3 and be sure to say Richard was from Trefeglwys and Ann
was from Carno. Otherwise, wait until you get the birth certificate and
order the marriage certificate after you know for sure what Ann's maiden
name was. Details found on the GENUKI pages for Wales under Civil
Registration. You'll need to use a currency exchange firm to prepare a
checque in British Pounds Sterling to cover the cost of the certificate(s).
To locate Richard's baptism, you'll need to use the nearest LDS FHC and
order the microfilm of the Bishop's Transcripts (BT's) for the parish of
Trefeglwys. These cover events up to 1837. Likewise, once you know Ann's
maiden name from the birth certificate you order, you can order the LDS
microfilm of the BT's for the parish of Carno and locate her baptism, and so
on, looking for their parents' marriage, their parents' baptisms, etc.
As for your Margaret Hughes, I suggest you try to obtain a bit more
information on her. Begin with locating her death certificate ---
hopefully, her parents will be named on it. If not, look for an obituary or
death notice in the local newspaper or, if she "kept Welsh", look for a
publication put out by her church or a widely-distributed periodical
published by whichever religion she belonged to -- these often included
details of where the deceased originated and who their family members were.
You should also look in the same area she married in and find the family in
the 1880 and 1870 census returns (if they had arrived by then). If you
don't find the family, get in touch with local genealogical/historical
societies to see if they've transcribed the cemeteries for the area and look
for any HUGHES gravestones. If the county was keeping track of deaths in
that time, see if there are any HUGHES deaths recorded. If you can figure
out her parents' names, you may be able to order Margaret's birth
certificate from the FRC, London. With no parents' names, there's no way.
The family may also appear on ships passenger lists -- have you checked the
online ships transcribers' lists? Also, locate Margaret in later (1900+)
census returns --- she would've been asked when she emigrated and if/when
she was naturalized, where her parents were born, etc.
I have the 1880 U.S. Census Index (LDS CD's) --- if you can tell me where
Margaret was married (town & county), I can look for her. Do you know if
she had any siblings? Did she have children? If so, what were their names
(in order of birth)? The practice of naming children after their
grandparents was still common.

Julie Preston

Hi List,
Where do I start-- by kicking myself I think!
I have found out today that because of some stupid mistake on my part I have been going down the wrong road of my VAUGHAN tree. I thought I was making good headway -- but seems I must start again.
Well here goes. I am trying to find a Charles VAUGHAN father of Isaac VAUGHAN. All I have to go on is that Isaac was born in Brecknock abt 1836. On his marriage certificate Charles's occupation was Quarryman. I have been unable to find a match on the 1881 census. I would be very grateful for any help.
I suppose this has taught me a good lesson to double check EVERYTHING.

Hi everyone
If anyone has access to Forden memorial inscriptions or registers for 1874,
I am looking for one Martha Rogers (June quarter) whose death is registered
in the district. Age fits perfectly with the wife of my William Rogers
(shoemaker/farmer). My Martha was born in Forden in 1808. Also looking for
any death of William Rogers (husband) any time after 1851, ex Welshpool.
Cheers

Glad another having trouble with this. Had it in past but no fiche viewing facilities and found what I wanted, then to get it again had to do an archives search for one of the Powys or Shropshire L lists for instructions, even then difficulty. Eventually got it up again (RG13 reference for 1901), while later found how to place order for fiches,
had an acknowledgment from the PRO. That was days ago and still not had a quotation, hope I will be able to deal with that when it comes. How long does a quote take?
INCIDENTALLY think you need to enable cookies, it should be possible to make just this one site a "trusted" to receive such.
http://www.pro.gov.uk/recordcopying/census.htm for a quotation of cost of what you want, once you have made a list of reference numbers for required items, which from:
http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/ then its a maze.
Jo. Not the most efficient person.
I went on to the GRO website recently but couldn't find the page which lists
sales details of fiche, film etc. Does anyone have its address? Thanks.

I'm sorry, I should have thought to put more information in my last email!
My ancestors name is Richard Charles Evans he was listed in the census with
his parents Richard and Ann. This is where I've hit the wall, I'm at a
loss as to what to do next. I want to find their parents but am not sure
where to look.
Margaret Hughes immigrated to the US while an infant according to the
information I have. Her mother died shortly after and her father died when
she was 11. My problem here is I don't have their names. I do know that
she married at a Welsh church in Ohio on January 17,1888.
If anyone has any ideas for me I would greatly appreciate it!

Hello Douglas,
Thanks for the offer to help. The only "Sure" thing I have is a photo of
William and Ann's headstone with their daughter (Clara) and son-in-law
(Hughie H. Parry) on it also.
SKS sent me info from the 1901, 1891, 1881, 1871, 1861 & 1851 census. All
with a William Jones. In 1851 he's listed as age 14, born - Dwygyfylchi. Now
if the census was taken in April and William would turned 15 in Dec., then he
would of been born in 1836.
I haven't sent for any records yet as I'm not sure of when and where yet!
Francis was in the 1881 census as age 16. He was married in Atlanta,
Georgia in June of 1888 and lived in Lithonia, Georgia, just eadt of Atlanta.
So somewhere between the 1881 census (Wales) and marriage in 1888(USA).
Any help would terrific!
I'm tired and my brain hurts. Hope this makes sense!
Thanks for your offer!
