Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hi Rebecca,
Try this URL:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=304180&Y=228360
You should find Llandefailog Fach, just north of Brecon. You can find an
1898 map of Wales in my web site (second URL in sig).
Listwise, I would suggest you subscribe to Midmarch and at least ask there.
It is a busy list.
Good luck,
Malcolm

Hello POWYS List members
I've made my way through my other hard to locate families and so I've decided
to re-post my names to the List in hopes that there might be new researchers
looking for the same people.
I am tracing my WHITNEY family back through Zachariah WHITNEY, born May 17,
1851, at Pentwynmawr, Clydach Iron Works, near Llanelly, Breconshire. His
birth is registered at the Crickhowell district, although his name is spelled
ZECHARIAH on the register. Parents, Walter WHITNEY and Caroline CROSS,
married September 1850, are shown in the 1851 census for Pentwynmawr.
Walter, aged 21, occupation coal miner (born Llanelly, Breconshire), and
Caroline, 23 (also born Llanelly).
The 1851 census also shows two houses away, a second Walter WHITNEY, aged 48,
a coal miner and beerhouse keeper (born Llanelly, Breconshire) and his wife
Leah (nee EDMUNDS), aged 45 (born around Monmouthshire), with children: Henry,
Rebecca, Mary, Ann, Leah and John. Another son Edward was born in 1853.
The 1851 census records a third Walter WHITNEY, a 72 year old widower, lodging
with a farmer named Samuel MORGAN. In the 1841 Census, he appears (age 62)
with his wife Sarah. This Walter and his wife are believed to be Zachariah's
great grandparents. Samuel Morgan is also believed to be a relative.
Also listed in the 1851 census are Andrew CROSS, 67, labourer in the Coal and
Iron Works (born at Dymock, Herefordshire), with wife Ann, 52 (born in
Llanelly, Breconshire), Benjamin, 25, a coal
miner, and Sabina, 21. Andrew and Ann Cross are the parents of Caroline Cross.

Barbara DB12251(a)aol.com

I was going by what was in the newspaper and what I was told at Brecon meusem, no wonder I was going round in circles much appreciated.

Dear Janice:
1. Yes, there were masons in Wales in the 1700's. I don't know all the
histories but the Grand lodge of England was formally introduced in the early
1700's.
2. Masonic Web Pages: there are many, ususally at least one to each state or
more. You might use your web brouser to find them.
3. To set up something for your brothers, they must contact their local lodge
by telephone or in person (it is a brotherhood/type of fraternity) and ask how
they can join and the membership will take it from there.
4. If I can help further, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Rex Bowen

Question for UK rooters -
I've seen this reference to "sterling" several times on
this list. I would imagine that sterling is specified in British
speech so that others would know they're talking about money and
not potatoes, grapes, etc.
But - is the UK pound a paper certificate showing that it's
equal to one pound sterling silver?
The US dollar used to be a paper "silver certificate",
now they just stay "Federal Reserve Note" on top where the
"Silver Certificate" used to be.
I agree with Annie LLoyd - 10USD is something unknown to
me. This whole thread on money is very informative and useful!
Thanks,
Ann Rickard, USA

I am enjoying sites where the listings are in English and Welsh. I found a
saying on someone's website and would like to have it translated into Welsh so
I can do a calligraphy for my father, no author was given.
" To be born Welsh
is to be born priveledged,
not with a silver spoon in your mouth
but with music in your blood
and poetry in your soul."
Thank you once again,

Now that you have answered Lou's question, please kindly tell me if I am where
I need to be also. I am posting for Samuel Thomas, christened 9 Oct 1743 in
Llandefailgfach, Brecon, Wales. I have been told the Llandefailog Fach is
just north of the town of Brecon. Should I be on Midmarch as well? Any
others? I am having a terrible time finding a map of Wales, without the whole
UK so I can "see" where these places are.
Thanks!

Hi Lou,
The Powys Family History Society (FHS) and this list are separate entities,
although they have some things in common.
This list does cover Caernarfon ("Powys and North Wales Mailing List"),
although with such a large area there will obviously be traffic outside of
any individual's interests.
The Powys FHS doesn't cover Caernarfon, you need the Gwynedd FHS.
For Monmouth you now have two choices of mailing list. Midmarch covers all
of Monmouthshire, plus English border counties. If you have interests in
north Mon, specifically around Blaina/Nantyglo, close to Ebbw Vale and the
Brecon border, there is a new Blaenau Gwent list just for that specific area.
There is a Gwent FHS.
Details of most of these can be found at
http://www.embetech.demon.co.uk/powys/index.htm
I haven't updated it for the Blaenau Gwent list yet, but the subscription
address is BLAENAUGWENT-L-request(a)rootsweb.com.
If the quantities of mail are a problem, you might consider changing to
Digest mode. You still get the same stuff, but it comes in one big chunk
rather than lots of little ones!
Hope this helps,
Malcolm

Thank you Blanche - I think the whole list could
be overwhelming, but, as you point out, this is
a 'Welsh List' so we also need a circumflex accent for
o, u, w and y please ?

Hi Jill,
Your "Lanethley in Breconshire " is actually "Llanelly" (or Llanelli), a small village just inside Breconshire, about 4 miles west of Abergavenny. The National Grid reference is SO 232 148. Llanelli is shown on my 4 miles to 1 inch scale Geographia Road Atlas of Britain, and also on my 1cm to 2.5 km Ordnance Survey Atlas of Great Britain, as well as on larger scale maps.
I can't find your "Cllywyn".
Best wishes,

Hi All,
You can also generate the British pounds symbol (£) by keeping the "Alt" key
pressed and typing the numbers 1 5 6 on the numeric keypad (with Num Lock
off). This code seems to survive transmission over the Internet.
I've never seen "10USD" before either. Surely we can ALL produce a dollars
($) symbol??

Hi there,
I am looking for NELLIE MARY BLOWS. She was born in London in 1885.
Some time after her father completed 21 years in the army in 1889
she was living in Beddgelert.
According to a cousin; he says she was the owner of a hotel
there. This same cousin claims to have spoken to her about 12 months
ago, even though she would have been 112 years old ??
I feel that he possible spoke to a daughter.
My cousin is not into genealogy and so did not take notes, use a tape
recorder or even get her last name.
Does anyone on the list have any ideas or suggestions as to how I might
follow this lead ?
Thank you, Ernie in san Diego.
Hi Allison & List
My keyboard does not have the "£ " sign. However, for those in the same
situation there is an ANSI code.
With the Number Lock on, using the NUMERIC KEYBOARD you hold down the ALT
key and enter 0163.
Hey presto!. [In the same way, é is 0233 and ñ is 0241. Since this is
a Welsh List, â is 0226]
If anybody's interested, I don't mind publishing the complete list. [There
are all sorts of things like ¼ 0188 etc.]
All the best
Blanche Charles

PS Allison, I bet Burgh Heath & Banstead are looking lovely now. I'm
there in spirit! [My Dad's "anniversary" in a couple of weeks' time.]
