Hello Pamela,
You wrote: Where did the list of those who participated in the Patriot War originate?
Probably from a book by Edwin C. Guillet. It has appeared in other histories throughout
the northern New York area -- one of which is the History of St. Lawrence County.
The best reading I've done on the subject was from Pat James' Genealogical Journal
of Jefferson County, N. Y., done in Dec 1992 p. 122. I believe Pat has these volumes for
sale. She has a website, but I've lost the address. Her periodicals were always
very, very interesting.
I am hoping that someone will someday get permission to post on the Internet a series of
26 articles done in the Watertown Daily Times in March-April-May of 1923 (regarding this
war). They are so very interesting. I would gladly type them and put them on my site,
but I can't seem to get permission -- huge articles.
Here is a bibliography from Pat James' article -- I hope I can get away with showing
it here:
(1) "The Lives and Times of the Patriots" by Edwin C. Guillet, 1968.
University of Toronto Press.
(2) "The Family Compact" by William Wallace STEWART, 1915. (Chronicles of
Canada series, V. 24)
(3) "The Firebrand" by William Clark KILBORN, 1956
(4) The Patriot War "Bulletin" Vol. 22, Jul 1990, p. 25, Jefferson Co.
Historical Society
Additional Reading
The Patriot War of 1837-40 Thousand Islands Sun newspaper of Alexandria Bay, N. Y., Aug.
1990
Also, the following rare books:
"Loose Leaves" by Thomas SUTHERLAND
"Recollections of Life in Van Diemen's Land" by William GATES of Lyme, N. Y.
"Narrative of a Patriot Exile" by Robert MARSH of Detroit, MI
"Narrative of the Adventures and Sufferinigs of Capt. Daniel HUESTIS" of
Watertown, N. Y.
Miss James did such a good job on this, I suspect she found each of these books when she
did her article. Also, you can order copies of her articles from the PERSI program out of
Ft. Wayne's Allen County Public Library, Genealogy Dept. (check
Ancestry.com if you
have a subscription)
Hope this helps. And, of course, stay subscribed to this list -- the more reading we do
on the subject, the more activity we'll have on the list. Right?
Shirley
