<< What was the name of Asa Priest's wife and children? >>
Hello, Bonnie and all. I checked with
Google.com and gleaned from the three
survivor accounts plus some other materials that:
Asa Priest was age 43 in 1837
and 45 at his death on 10 October 1839 (on the ship Buffalo)
so he was born about 1794.
He left a family in Auburn, New York State.
A Hannah Priest, wife of Asa Priest,
died on 22 Apr 1844, age 79
(so she was born about 1765)
and was buried in Oneida County, New York State.
Was this our Asa's mother?
An Asa Priest served in 1777-1778,
General Butterson's brigade,
at Valley Forge and other locations.
Was this our Asa's father?
At
Google.com you will find other references to Asa Priest who fought in the
War for Independence and is today recalled by his female descendants who are
members of the D.A.R. "Asa Priest (1759-1844) served, 1775-80, as private
in the Massachusetts Continental Line. He was born in Leominster, Mass.; died
in Sanquoit, N. Y." And again: "Asa Priest, (1759-1844), was placed on the
pension roll of Oneida Co., N. Y., 1831, for service as private in the
Massachusetts Continental Line. He was born in Leominster, Mass.; died in
Sauquoit, N. Y."
Yes, yes, I know we want the wife and children of the Patriot Asa - but it is
useful to know that the family had New York State roots and a track record of
fighting for representative government. Also, these references give us a
number of places to look for more information.
Since Asa Priest appears to be a distinguished and a distinguishing name, the
researchers on the PRIEST-L(a)rootsweb.com may have the answer to the question
about the wife and children.
Salut to all!
