Greetings, Patriots War listers:
Patriots named HEUSTIS, MARSH, and SNOW all wrote accounts of their transport
aboard the ship "Buffalo" in 1788-89 and their lives as convicts in Australia
- and excerpts from these accounts are now online at
http://www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/AHR/convict/narratives/heustis.htm
At least two of the above were American citizens - perhaps all three.
Heustis was a captain in the Patriot force - I think the others had been in
leadership positions as well.
One of the French patriots likewise wrote a book about his experience - a
journal begun on landing in Australia. This is "Land of a Thousand
Sorrows". Sorry - I do not have more information on this book at hand, but
the added detail necessary to order it from your library should be findable
on
Google.com.
My cousin, Carol Anne Chiniquy, has found that the only Patriot prisoner to
remain in Australia after being able to leave was HER cousin, Joseph Marceau.
Apparently the rest (those who had not died) were repatriated to the US,
Ontario, and Quebec. Joseph Marceau had several children whose descendants
are still there - waving the Patriot flag, I'll bet!
Cheers to all,
Ginny Crawford
