Hi all
I hope that I have gotten to the right place, the lists of milita were
long....smile
I have a question or two
I have one TOWN MAJOR C. MACDONALD
that has entered into the family genealogy, I have had his picture for some
time now but had no idea who he was until recently and that knowledge is
still limited
I do not have a first name only an initial
He was stationed in Montreal at least as early as 1837 in relation to the
McCord papers as I found one and only one reference to him at this address
http://www.ghm-mhg.mcgill.ca/ppi/young.html#sdfootnote57sym
I have also located two more pictures of him thru the collection of the
photographer at the McCord Museum in Montreal
I was told by the museum that I was only one of many who have brought this
picture forward as being in the family photo album noted as family. However
we do have a little more information in that he is an "uncle" to my 3x
grandmother. But with both her parents being MacDonald's not sure which side
of the house he is on.
Back to him. Does anyone know exactly what a Town Major is? Would he have
been like a Mayor of Montreal? Head of the Militia of Montreal?
His uniform depicts 3 medals, I am told will be well earned. Does this mean
he served in/for Britian prior to coming to Canada? He is from
Sutherlandshire, Scotland, this much I do know. He also may if he is from
the male line be a descendant of the Glencoe MacDonald's
Has anyone here ever heard of him?
If I missed any questions to ask just go ahead and answer what you think I
should have asked.......smile
