Yes, Ira Polley is my wife's 2 x gt grandfather. He was well thought
of and respected in the Illawarra community. He established the
Congregational Church first in his home and later in a Public
building.
I really wonder if Marceau returned to Canada or US at all. The
writings here in Australia (other than the Illawarra Pioneers) suggest
he stayed in Australia and never returned. I will check my notes.
I wouldn't be surprised though if Marceau and Polley contacted people
back home to send them axes. American iron and steel was of excellent
quality; also the shape of an American axe is different from an
English axe. Neighbours would have seen their good axes and said " I
want one too" so maybe they began to import them.
There are no American axes surviving in the Polley family - I wonder
if the Marceau's have one/any?
Regards
David

Hi, David. Thanks for your note. Somehow I understood from my
reading
(bits and pieces, here and there) that quite a few of the
Canadians/Americans
stayed as well. Sorry if I was providing wrong info!
Marceau, a widower, obviously had good reason to stay - today's
large and
vigorous Marceau family in Australia is the result. I think there
are
modern descendants of his first three children as well - the ones
born in
Quebec. Joseph may well have gone back to Canada to be sure his
children
were in good (family) hands, then returned to Australia with the
axes - a
brilliant idea! - and then married. My cousin, who is related to
Joseph,
has most of his relevant dates.
Is Ira POLLEY your ancestor?
Cheers, from
Ginny Crawford
