The "____ Tracy" in Kit Cutting's last message was almost certainly Henry
Tracy. During his trial at Court Martial, my 3rd great-grandfather, Joel Peeler testified
that
"I told Henry Tracy I was unwilling to stay any longer to fight, and he said he was
not willing. We started and went to the river and found the old scow which had the cannon
in it - we concluded to wait till the morning and then cross but it was then too rough and
the scow had filled with water and sunk, and a canoe we had seen at night was gone in the
morning." Henry obviously made his later escape; Joel was not so fortunate.
