From 1682 to 1954 the City of Philadelphia was that
part of
present day Philadelphia between the rivers
and between South St. and Vine St.
The city was part of the county of Philadelphia.
After 1794, the county of Philadelphia's boundaries
were the same as the present day City and County of
Philadelphia but the city's boundaries were still
between the rivers and between South St. and Vine St.
The areas north, south, and west of the actual city
contained various townships, buroughs, districts, etc.
which correspond to the present day neighborhoods,
such as the Township of Germantown which became the
neighborhood of Germantown. The city and county
consolidated in 1854. You do not state the date of
your will. If your ancestor died in one of the
buroughs, districts, townships, etc., he won't be
listed in the city directories.

I have an ancestor's whose will indicates" of
Philadelphia county".
Is there a Philadelphia Township for this time
period?
When searching Philadelphia CITY directories - I
have not been able to locate him.
What kinds of records exist this early for the
"County of Philadelphia"? for this time period?
Appreciate any help.
