Hi Bob,
That's a generous offer and I appreciate it. If I can get useful leads from
the Steven Morse site, I could well take you up on it: PA Vital Records are
usually difficult to obtain if you're outside the US. I was recently trying to
get a Death Cert and the form requested US identification with photo, and I
couldn't get info as to whether a UK passport was acceptable. Not to speak of
them asking for a US dollar check with no credit card payment facility. In
the end I asked a distant cousin to help, but it's nice to have a genealogist
understand the problem!
Maggie, spam blockers are only for unwanted or scam mail. Unfortunately it
isn't pliable enough to enable those whom I would want to reply. Though
there is a filter I will try to see if I can allow this site. Then the
trouble is the tons of emails on this site will all come to me - that's
life I guess.
One of the Rootsweb lists I susbscribe to has a Digest facility, where you
can just read the topics you're interested in, so I kind of imagine they all
do. Though I find I don't know if I'm interested until I read one!! That's
also
life. I understand the problem but am fortunate that AOL, for all its
faults, has a pretty good spam filter, so if I see five a day it's about the
average - down from about 100 at one time.

http://www.stevemorse.org has a wealth of info for those who
immigrated to NYC from 1860s to 1938, basically. You can get certificate
numbers for retrieval which lessens the cost and time to get via the
Municipal archives.
If I am going to the Archives and you need a certificate that you already
know the number and date, I would be happy to get it for you at the cost of
$6.00 (2007) versus $12.00 via mail or much more via online services.
Maggie, I'm a he and a pretty decent guy at that - if I say so myself - lol
:)

You're allowed to say you're a pretty decent guy, I think: after all, if you
didn't, who would know????
many thanks
Maggie
