I am looking for a connection to the Jane Buchanan b. October 1799 in
PA. I am sure that Buchanan was her married name but this might ring a
cord with someone on this list.I hope. Jane died November 7th 1875 in
Indianapolis, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. With her is buried a
child probably an infant as there is no name given just child of William
E. Buchanan.
I believe Jane to be the mother of Cyrus F. Buchanan as she always lived
next door to him according to census and like him was born in PA; she
followed him in death very closely. On one census a John A. Buchanan is
living with Jane and is 21 years old, he is a carpenter as is Cyrus, I
am not sure if John is a younger brother to Cyrus or a nephew. They are
on the same page of the 1873 city directory, Cyrus died shortly after
that In 1873; they are both on the 1872-3 directory John is in the 1875
directory. Cyrus F. Buchanan was a carpenter and worked as a carpenter
for the insane hospital in Indianapolis. He lived across the street from
the hospital. He married twice, the first was in 1850 in Ripley County
IN, Miss Elizabeth Jennings. She was born 1827 in Indiana, died 5 Oct
1859 in Indiana. As far as I know they had Ezra and Eliza Jane Buchanan.
Cyrus then remarried abt 1862 or 3 in Indianapolis, Miss Elizabeth Kirby
and they had William E. Buchanan in 1864; Jacob in 1869;John Henry in
1873. I don't know if there were any children between William and John
Henry. John Henry Buchanan is my husband's grandfather. We lost the
history of the family because of his father's early death at age 45
(john Henry was 3 months of age when his father died). His mother
remarried a man by the name of Charles Haskins in Indianapolis, and John
and he did not get along so John ran away at an early age (about 10),
and until I found Cyrus' name in a baby book no one ever knew his name.
The only thing that my mother in law could tell me was that he was a
carpenter and worked at a hospital in Indianapolis. John Henry worked on
ranches in the area until he was grown and then went to Utah to meet
with a friend and there he met and married Euphemia Simpson. John always
said his brother William E. married a lady from Canada and went there to
live. That lady wrote several letters to the family seeking the Buchanan
genealogy but no one kept her address so I am at a loss.
I would love to know where in PA they came from, there are quite a few
Buchanan's in PA.
On the 1870 census Cyrus is listed and his wife Elizabeth (Kirby) and
William E. who was 5, Eliza J. who was 14, Jacob S. who was 1, and Jane
who was 70.
I think there were two census' in 1870 that was the first one I think, I
copied both. On the second one it is like this:
Cyrus F Buchanan 42, carpenter, b. PA. mother of foreign birth.
Elizabeth 31, Pennsylvania, keeping house
Ezra 15, b. Indiana
William 6, Indiana
Jacob 1, Indiana
Jane 71, PA.
If anyone on this list can help me with this I would surely appreciate
it.
