Celia, you have made a good start by listing what you
know about George Nelson and other family members here
on PA genweb. You can also go to
http://www.usgenweb.com/ and after choosing
Pennsylvania, find the county web pages. (I think it
is Philadelphia County, if I am not mistaken) Look at
the resources listed there. Also, send your message
to the Philadelphia county message board here on
rootsweb. Then, look for the surname message boards
on
rootsweb.com and post your message not just on the
Nelson board, but also some of other surnames listed
in your message here. Also check to see if George is
listed in any of the family trees posted to rootsweb.
If so, contact the owners of those trees. they may be
working backwards from George and be delighted to make
a connection.
Good luck!

Hi listers, though I've been researching my British
families for some years,
this is my first venture into USA research and I
hope for some help with
starting out.
One of my maternal lines, the NELSONs, were
connected with Sulgrave in
Northamptonshire. I have just discovered that
George NELSON, the brother of
my 5 x great-grandfather Thomas NELSON, was a Yeoman
in Philadelphia, in the
Province of Pennsylvania, in January 1772, according
to a property deed held
by Sulgrave Manor, Northants (home of George
WASHINGTON's ancestors though I
should say immediately I don't think there is any
connection at all between
my NELSONs and the WASHINGTONs!).
I would really appreciate some guidance on what
sources exist that might
tell me more about this George NELSON especially any
available online (free
or pay to view, other than Ancestry which I know
about). I'm particularly
keen to look for a Will or a record of a gravestone
inscription. I don't
suppose there would be anything miraculous like an
immigration record?
For the record, I believe that my Philadelpia George
NELSON and his brother
Thomas (who in 1772 was an Innkeeper in Northampton,
soon afterwards moving
to run the Crown coaching inn in Buckingham, Bucks)
were the sons of George
NELSON and Sarah COOPER who married in Sulgrave on 9
Nov 1727. They also
had a dau Jane who married William CHECKLEY on 29
Oct 1755 in Sulgrave and a
William CHECKLEY is named as a Trustee in the
property document mentioned
above. It appears that the family were regular
Church of England and not
dissenters, so I guess would be most likely
Episcopal in Phil.
Any info or guidance will be much appreciated.
