Replying to the question of what genealogy program to have. Unfortunately
the man had installed Vista and discovered he could not use the genealogy
program he had. Now that Microsoft is throwing in the sponge on Vista, it
must be particularly galling to have lost the use of your program.
I installed a later version of Family Tree Maker, decided that had been a
mistake and reverted to my older version. The main hit on FTM however, is
that it has a cumbersome method for recording your sources and did not
demand that you do so when you entered new data, so it was too easy to input
a bunch of stuff without recording sources.

I believe that only members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day
Saints have access to the
New.familySearch.org. In order to get full
access
to the site you have to have your membership number and date of
confirmation
and you have to have signed on to
familysearch.org.

Gordon,
PAF is free and does a pretty good job. You can download it from the
www.FamilySearch.org website. If you choose to you can also go to
www.new.familySearch.org and do everything on-line. If you are willing to
pay for software my money is on Roots Magic. I have been very pleased with
it and their support. I have been using it for some time (since ver. 1.0).
They have had a couple of completely new versions that have required an
update purchase but they were $19.95 as I recall. Those up-dates imported
the previous version files and a multitude of others if you were changing
programs or were receiving files from others using a different program.
The
imports did not need to be GEDCOM files although that is available and a
main stay in the family history world. Roots Magic has a pretty robust
documentation feature. That was my main reason for switching originally. A
version 4 is expected to be released before the end of the year.
Good Luck with your decision.

Subject: [PAGENWEB] Software
What brand of software do list members use? I just purchased a new
computer, attempted to transfer my old Family Tree Maker files to the new
machine and I am told that I have to upgrade to read my old files. I am
not
happy at having to purchase new software just to read an old file.
Currently I have FTM 2005 and am running vista and yes I have installed
the
vista update.
My point is that if I have to purchase new software I might as well see if
there is something better available. I do know that I have over 2000
individuals on my FTM file and if I cannot open/read it I will be a
little
miffed.
If you use software and would recommend what you use I would appreciate
your input.
Thanks
Gordon Burgett

I believe you are mistaken on the sign-in for
Familysearchlabs.com. I am
not
LDS but am able to use the site after a simple user and password sign-up.
Maybe I am only able to use part of it.
