On the contrary, back then those records belonged to the minister who took
them with him when he moved to another congregation (generally marriages,
baptisms, membership rolls). The practice varied from denomination to
denomination. Today you can find some ministers' records in the PA
Archives, otherwise look in local genealogical societies, local libraries,
etc. These records are much like family Bibles. Unless they were donated
to some sort of library for preservation they are probably lost.

records, they told me that clergymen usually "took the records with them".
That really confused me! Why would a clergyman take the records with him?
They don't belong to him. They belong to the church! Opinions?

People in the 18th Century did not have obits nor marriage annoucements.
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has church records from that period.
Clergymen often kept marriage records.
